Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about TC Electronic Vortex Flanger.

Comparisons

  • Owners transitioning from the Boss BF-3 to the Vortex Flanger find the Vortex less aggressive post-dirt, though some prefer the warmth of the Mooer e-lady.

    Source
  • The TC Electronic Thunderstorm Flanger is recommended for subtle to medium flanging and is noted for its warm tones, potentially similar to the Boss BF-2.

    Source
  • The Thunderstorm is described as having a slightly dirty sound with a volume boost, unlike other flangers that may reduce volume.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Vortex Flanger offers customization via a laptop, allowing adjustments to high-end frequencies and feedback, which can help reduce harshness.

    Source
  • The Vortex offers stereo output, enhancing its versatility compared to the mono Thunderstorm.

    Source
  • The Vortex Flanger's TonePrint editor allows users to customize stereo versus mono settings by using stereo TonePrints as a base.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Vortex's through-zero mode is highlighted, but some users prefer Catalinbread Zero Point for that specific effect.

    Source
  • Users seeking the Andy Summers low-rate, high-width sound found the Thunderstorm effective for achieving this specific tone.

    Source
  • The Vortex Flanger excels in producing subtle flanger, chorus, and vibrato sounds when configured via the TonePrint editor.

    Source

User experience

  • While praised for its customization, some users describe the Vortex's sound as mechanical or digital, struggling to achieve a "real" flanger tone.

    Source
  • Users have noted that incorporating drive with the Vortex can result in unwanted "jet" flanger sounds, indicating its best use for more subtle effects without distortion.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The Vortex's TonePrint app expands its functionality, allowing transformation into a Chorus or Vibrato, unlike the Thunderstorm.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • For budget-conscious buyers, the Thunderstorm offers a more focused effect akin to the Boss BF-2, while the Vortex provides broader versatility.

Used to own - decent one

I usually feel TC pedals a bit sterile - and this was exactly the case with this one. The biggest plus was the abilkity to get the zero flanger setting -useful for those Jimi Hendrix cuts. But overall i think that this line is better for tinkerers uploadingand downloading all those "cool" presets to enjoy. I am a plug-and-play guy.

love it

this is currently my favourite flanger pedal. it is pretty great out of the box but what really sets it apart for me is being able to download toneprints of all my favourite flanger sounds like the deluxe electric mistress without any of the issues of old pedals like that.

milos_jeremic

Perfect modulation

I spent one hour in the store to choose between famous MXR flanger (discounted 50%) and this one. I was sad cause I prefer Vortex. As times goes by I love it more and more. Easy to handle and to get good tone with perfect software support

john_tebbitt

Nice flanger balances the modulation series from TC

This fills out my modulation effect set, like the flanger and a little subtle flange with chorus can give the tone a great edge.

roberttengs

Really good and flexible tone

Thees pedals with toneprint are for me the best, Rich possibility for creating the sound that fits you.

lespaul

Not the greatest, but it works.

It's a flanger. What more do you want? It flanges. That's about it.

jimmarchi1

there's flange and flange

tomwilson87

Does a lot more than most flangers do. Has unique toneprint customization. Read a manual or do some research before you post ignorant ratings.

It was built by Craig Pattison Rig Design and includes a TC Electronic Flashback Delay, Vortex Flanger and Hall Of Fame Reverb, and a BOSS Blues Driver BD-2, Flanger BF-3 and Loop Station RC-30, among others. Donna's love of feedback is evidenced in her use of an EBow, as heard on the song "ANOTHERLOVE" from Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL's debut album, PLECTRUMELECTRUM and “MR MAJESTIC” from her debut album, DIAMONDS & DYNAMITE. Most recently, Donna has been experimenting with the Empress Echosystem Dual Engine Delay that features up to 35 presets ranging from classic to obscure sounds. She uses the pedal in-stereo creating complex delays by assigning unique settings to multiple cabinets."
