Critic Reviews

Tech 21 SansAmp Classic

soundonsound.com

The Tech 21 SansAmp Classic shines as a versatile, all-analog amp and speaker simulator, delivering zero-latency and tube-like warmth that's cherished in many iconic recordings. Its unique DIP switch controls offer a broad tonal palette, making it a standout for high-gain guitar sounds and even non-guitar sources. However, its learning curve may deter those seeking plug-and-play simplicity, and some may find its bass response lacking. Yet, for those seeking authentic, dynamic response in a DI setting, it remains a beloved choice despite the proliferation of modern digital modelers. A true classic, indeed!

Distortion with a distinct flavour. I prefer this one over any other distortion.

it is what it is

I had one of these at one point.... never bonded with it as a DI or a dirt box. I vastly preferred the GT2.... also, the dip switches on this thing were so irritating. Skip.

its a very very great pedal... you dont need to use a tank to kill a mosquito... you know what i mean...

cloudtapes

Tons of options.

I'm still getting to know this pedal, but I'm loving the variety of tonal options. Supposed to also work really well for other instruments.

Lianne La Havas has mentioned using a SansAmp for most of the guitars on her album "Is Your Love Big Enough?". The specific model however is not specified.

From Guitar World:

What do you plug it into?

On stage, normally, I have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe when I play my gigs with the band. But when I’m playing just solo, I’ll normally go through the DI and I’ve got a SansAmp, which I think the sound comes out really nice. That’s what I recorded, actually, for the guitar on the album. It’s mostly through a SansAmp. Or I have a portable Roland Cube Amp, which is like a practice amp, so I take that around with me as well.

After years of tracking down Fender Twins at every port of call and recording with Vox AC30s, Harvey has pared down his backline to a pocket-sized Tech 21 SansAmp pedal. "The first model, with the funny little switches," he says. "You can wind it into the most radical tones very quickly. I get an amp with a completely neutral, uninteresting sound - like a Roland JC-120 - then plug the SansAmp in. I started using it for Let Love In [in 1994], and it was brilliant. - Guitar Player interview, 1996

In the "Ask Quine" section of Robert's website, he answered a fan's question about his recording setup for Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" album. The exchange went as follows:

Q: I am a guitar player. My introduction to your playing is Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend. Your playing on that record is absolutely phenomenal and unique. Your tone is also fantastic on that record. Would you mind sharing your setup on the song, 'I've Been Waiting'? Did you use the same fuzz pedal for the entire album? I can't get enough of that song and I listen to that record all the time. Thanks very much. —Gary Rosner

A: I didn't play on 'I've Been Waiting'. But on that album all I used was a Strat, a SansAmp, and various Fender amps. Thanks.
