Used for vocals on Icky Thump, as stated by recording and mixing engineer Joe Chiccarelli in this October 1, 2007 Mix Online interview.
Most of the vocals were recorded on a RCA 77DX ribbon microphone, but a U47 and an old Altec 633 salt shaker mic were also pressed into service. Processing, depending on the track, included a Telefunken V76 tube preamp, an 1176, an LA-3A, a Fairchild and a Chandler Limited EMI TG2 compressor. “Sometimes the vocal went through a guitar amp, sometimes through a Neve module with a preamp turned all the way up,” he says. “He's great about working the distortion, knowing how to sing to a certain microphone. He knows how to back way off and come way in when he needs to. The vocal is different on every single song."
Seen in the picture of his studio rack in the May 2018 Sound on Sound interview. Housed in a large black enclosure at the top of the left portion of the rack.
"I dig the Telefunken v76 mic pre. I use that thing for vocals, guitar, and toms. It's the coolest, heaviest mic pre I've heard. Definitely not transparent, an audio word I hate. If it doesn't have a sound why would I wanna use it."
Used for the lead vocals on Band of Joy (2010), as stated by tracking and mixing engineer in this Mike Poole in this December 2010 Sound on Sound article.
Poole was organised enough for this interview to supply a copy of his assistant Gordon Hammond's input chain sheet, reproduced on the left. Rather than explain each detail, Poole elaborated on some of the less usual aspects of his setup, for instance the Avantone BV1 on Robert Plant's vocals, which went through a Telefunken V76 and then an Inner Tube Audio Atomic Squeezebox compressor. Poole: "We tried a few mics on Robert, but the Avantone was definitely the best?sounding. It gave us the picture that wanted of his vocals. I had only used that mic a little bit before, and it has definitely become a go?to mic for me. It is very good at tracking sibilance, although after the vocal had gone through a compressor or two by the time I mixed, I had to do quite a bit of detailed work on 'esses' and mouth noises and so on. The Atomic Squeezebox is also fairly non?standard, but it is a really good compressor. It reminds me a bit of the Summit Audio stereo compressor; it has the same feel but is a little bit more transparent. For the sound image we were after it was great. It also allowed me to put a highly dynamic performance on tape without the compression being audible. I always monitored through an [Urei] 1178, which was part of the mix path, and which gave the coloration we wanted to hear."
Mentioned in this February 12, 2015 article from the Vintage King website.
Jim James' musical evolution has seen him move from just fronting his band, My Morning Jacket, to a much more production-based role on their latest Grammy-nominated release. Sharing a co-producer credit with Tucker Martine on The Waterfall, the band's seventh studio album, James looked to use a combination of vintage gear and faithful reproductions from Retro Instruments.
For the recording of "Believe (Nobody Knows)," Martine and James utilized two different vocal chains as the song employs doubled up vocals. For the first vocal, the duo used an RCA BK-5, which was plugged into a Retro Instruments OP-6 (a modern recreation of the storied RCA OP-6) and then run through a Retro Instruments 176. The second vocal was recorded by a vintage Neumann U-67, run through a Telefunken V76 mic pre and another Retro Instruments 176.
This article states that Jerry's studio includes "Daking (2), Focusrite (6), Grace (8), Neve 1073 (8), Neve 1084 (8), Telefunken V76 (4), and Upstate Audio (4)."
"Interviewer: What kind of gear did you use during the recording process?
Bouillet: Guitars used where FGN Fujigen Expert OS, 1978 Les Paul Standard, 1978 Ibanez Pf 300. Pickups Seymour Duncan JBs, Intex Cables which I highly recommend, Dunlop picks, Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Roland Micro Cube amps, Eleven. Boss Gt 100, Boss Super Shifter, Vemuram Triplex, Line 6 delay, D'Addario strings, Pro Tools. Neve 1073's, RCA pre's, V76's Shure 57's."
"In the studio, I use a Telefunken V76 preamp, 2 Tubtek EQ units and an LA2a limiter."
Per Sound On Sound, May 2005:
I also have various Pultecs, a couple of LA2A compressors, a couple of 1176s, LA4A, RCA BA6A, Neve 1073, 1076, Neve stereo compressor, Neve mastering EQ, Manley massive/passive, Manley DI, Manley mic pres, Telefunken V72, V76, Mastering Labs mic pres, Distressor, the SSL compressor and all the great microphones.
