Austrian Audio’s Hi-X20 nails the brief: a sturdy, lightweight closed-back studio headphone with a mostly neutral, analytical sound that’s easier on the ears than the Sony MDR-7506. Detail is strong, bass reaches deeper than expected for $149, and the slightly lifted treble adds clarity without tipping into harshness. The soundstage is surprisingly roomy for a closed-back design, and they’re easy to drive from modest gear. The knocks are real but manageable: the cups may feel narrow for larger ears, clamp force is a bit firm, and there’s a slight cupped-hands coloration plus a treble-forward balance that keeps them from sounding especially “fun.” Still, as a mixing/monitoring tool—and even a more listenable alternative to the studio-standard Sony—they come off as excellent value.
