Critic Reviews

The Audiophile World: The AKG K701 - 10-years Later Review

theaudiophileworld.net

Despite its age, the AKG K701 remains a beloved staple for audiophiles, praised for its near-neutral sonic character and impressive soundstage. The review lauds the headphone's detailed audio performance, which competes with contemporary high-end models like the Sennheiser Orpheus. However, it notes a significant burn-in period and some comfort issues with the headband. The new ear cushions from Dekoni Audio enhance warmth and soundstage, making the K701 a viable option even amidst newer offerings. Overall, the review is a testament to the K701's enduring value, albeit with some minor drawbacks.

AKG K701 Review - RTINGS.com

rtings.com

The AKG K701 headphones are lauded for their excellent audio reproduction and comfortable design, ideal for critical listening sessions. However, their open-back design leads to significant sound leakage and poor noise isolation, making them unsuitable for commuting and office environments. Their bulky build doesn't lend itself well to portability or sports use, and the lack of a detachable cable limits durability. While perfect for audiophiles seeking a spacious soundstage, they may not satisfy everyday users looking for versatility.

AKG K701 Headphones A New Reference Review By Phil Gold

enjoythemusic.com

The AKG K701 headphones are celebrated for their balanced, natural sound and exceptional comfort, making them a new reference in headphone performance. While not boasting the striking highs of the K1000 or the bass of the UE-10Pro, the K701 delivers a seamless audio experience across a broad frequency spectrum. They excel in dynamics, offering a warm, full-bodied sound that unveils the original signal's warmth without distortion. Though less visceral than some rivals, their coherent musical presentation wins out in most listening scenarios. Coupled with superior ergonomics and a competitive price, the K701 is a standout choice for discerning audiophiles.

AKG Acoustics K 701 headphones | Stereophile.com

stereophile.com

The AKG K 701 headphones impress with their comfortable fit, detailed engineering, and exceptional sound quality. Praised for their luxurious design and quiet performance, they are ideal for studio use, providing a natural top-end sparkle and robust bass. However, the K 701s require a proper headphone amp to shine, as they can exhibit edginess with insufficient power. While not suited for portable use, these headphones are a worthy investment for audiophiles seeking high-fidelity listening experiences. Despite their excellence, some users report durability issues, highlighting the need for careful handling and improved customer support from AKG.

AKG K701 review | What Hi-Fi?

whathifi.com

The AKG K701 headphones are a dream for detail enthusiasts, delivering exceptional clarity and insight at a competitive price. They're impressively built and offer top-notch comfort, making them ideal for long listening sessions. However, they might not thrill those seeking more dynamic and exciting sound profiles, as their sound can be overly analytical. Despite this, they are a remarkable bargain for those who prioritize precision in their audio experience.

Perfect for mixing orchestral

a lot of people dislike the lack of bass on this headphone, but for me it is the just right amont of bass. very good detailing, mid tier comfortability, good specifically for non-electrical instruments very good for orchestral, neutral flat

Great sound

They provide lots of dynamic range and really give you a sense of space in the mix. They are extremely adjustable and built for comfort. They are a little heavier than what I'm used to (upgrading from super-budget studio cans made with light plastic.)

bommel

omg

i was so disappointed ... well ... if you hate bass, you will love these headphones. They are pretty analytical since there isn't much masking going on. But listening to mixes without bass und with too less low mids makes simply no fun for me.

That's strange, I get plenty of low-end through mine. It's not wall rattling bass, of course since they are meant for monitoring your mix.

bommel

Huh... idk if i compare the m to hd650 or beyerdynamic 770 or 880 they were basicaly lifeless and it was impossible to judge a bassdrum ... with the hd 650 that is no problem so idk

hellomynameisgavin

Lovely sounding and looking headphones.

These headphones have crystal clear sound. The open back design make acoustic sound so much more fuller and real.

simfonik

I've been eyeing these headphones. It looks like you have quite a few different headphones, based on the reviews you're writing (which are great btw!). How do you like these compared to the others you have?

hellomynameisgavin

Definately up there on my tops. Although I do tend to use my Q701 more often due to the convenience of a removable chord, and the slightly more upped lows. I remember using these headphones while playing counter strike. When i heard gunshot, i thought it was real; It made my heart skip a beat. Other headphones made it sound more muffled and i could listen to it like "eh". Even after the initial jump scare, i was still uncomfortable with the gun sounds. That's how crystal clear the sound was.

" I love listening in different systems: my old trusty Genelec’s, my home stereo JBL’s, a shitty BOSE boombox, three different pairs of headphones (from high-end AKG 701’s to Sennheiser classic HD280 & HD-25). I also listen on my wife’s car sometimes. Mostly, when I’m listening I’m trying to get a similar-sounding mix across that multitude of systems. It obviously varies depending on the music, but overall, is a good thing to listen and compare on different systems and circumstances. Elements that for example are very present on headphones may not be so much in the living room, and even less on a car stereo. My goal is to find a good balance, even before I get to the mastering stage. Just the same way you cannot really fix a bad sound at the mix stage, mastering cannot fix a bad mix. "
