Description

The Behringer PRO-1 synthesizer is a dynamic throwback to the influential monophonic analog synthesizers of the early '80s. With its authentic 3340 and 3320 semiconductors, this semi-modular marvel delivers a robust all-analog signal path that is both rich and versatile. Whether you're a performer, producer, or sound designer, the PRO-1 offers a vast palette for creating the iconic basses and leads that defined a generation of music.

Equipped with dual voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), the PRO-1 allows you to experiment with saw, pulse, and triangle waveforms. The 24dB four-pole analog filter is capable of self-resonance, providing extensive tone-shaping capabilities that range from warm and smooth to aggressive and biting. The built-in arpeggiator and dual 64-step sequencer further amplify your creative potential, making performance and composition intuitive and engaging.

For those who wish to expand their sonic horizons, the PRO-1 is Eurorack compatible and supports up to 16 voices in Poly Chain mode, letting you connect multiple units for expanded polyphony. Add to this a switchable drone mode for ambient soundscapes, and you have a synthesizer that not only stands out on its own but integrates seamlessly into larger setups for more complex creations.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Behringer Pro-1.

User experience

  • Several users report that the Pro-1 maintains stable tuning over time, addressing concerns about tuning drift common in analog synths.

    Source
  • Enabling PolyChain changes the power LED color to red, flashing green with note-ons, aiding troubleshooting.

    Source
  • The audio quality is praised as spectacular, with a raw, iconic sound reminiscent of John Carpenter and Vince Clarke.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners can adjust the white noise trim inside the unit if the white noise generator is too quiet.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Pro-1 can act as a MIDI interface, transmitting incoming DIN MIDI data through its USB port.

    Source
  • The Pro-1 is recommended for fans of Vince Clarke and Yazoo, aligning well with that specific musical style.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Firmware updates via the SYNTHTRIBE app allow configuration of PolyChain, MIDI clock transmission, MIDI-in channel, and pitch bend range.

    Source
  • A significant MIDI pitch bend issue was present in firmware 1.26, resolved in firmware 1.31.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Pro-1 sequencer and arpeggiator require DIN MIDI to function and don't sync with MIDI clock over USB.

    Source
  • The Pro-1 features a Paraphonic Mode, allowing two notes to be played simultaneously, contrary to some misconceptions about its monophonic nature.

    Source
  • The modulation section shines, particularly using oscillator B as a mod source for oscillator A, creating unique, gritty FM tones.

    Source

Build quality

  • The Pro-1's build is slightly better than the original Pro-One, with similar slide switches that were present in the vintage model.

    Source
  • The 3-way switches are often criticized for not locking precisely, feeling unsatisfying, and potentially failing prematurely.

    Source
  • The Pro-1 is noted for its compact size, making it ideal as a desktop synth but potentially challenging for users with larger fingers.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Pro-1's sound is favored by fans of the original Sequential Circuits Pro-One, with some preferring its sound over the Model D after listening to demos.

    Source
  • The Pro-1 is considered more versatile for sound design due to its mod matrix, contrasting with the Model D's focus on vintage Minimoog sound.

    Source
  • Compared to the Sequential Prophet 5, the Pro-1's filter is described as grittier, with a wider sweet spot for modulation.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • For its price, owners find the Pro-1 offers good value but not exceptional due to build quality issues.

Critic Reviews

Behringer Pro-1 review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Behringer's Pro-1 synthesizer is a compelling homage to its legendary predecessor, delivering rich, vintage sounds with impressive versatility. Its dual oscillators and robust filter create a wide sonic palette, making it a joy for both classic and modern synthesis. The addition of Eurorack compatibility and a small tabletop design enhances its usability in various setups. However, early units may suffer from tuning issues, and the lack of preset saving limits its practicality for live performance. Despite these drawbacks, the Pro-1 stands out as an excellent choice for those seeking a powerful, analog monosynth at an accessible price.

Behringer Pro-1 Review, Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer

synthanatomy.com

Behringer's Pro-1 is a compelling homage to the Sequential Circuits classic, offering rich analog sounds and a versatile modulation matrix at an unbeatable price. The build quality shows some compromises, particularly with the cheap-feeling switches and plastic side panels, but the synth's sonic capabilities shine through. While MIDI implementation is somewhat limited, the Pro-1 excels in producing powerful basses and leads, making it a worthy addition to any studio. The lack of a keyboard is a downside, but its Eurorack compatibility adds significant value. Overall, it's a fantastic budget option with a few caveats that shouldn't deter potential buyers.

Behringer Pro-1 Review

musictech.com

The Behringer Pro-1 delivers impressive analog sounds at a budget price, closely mimicking the beloved Sequential Circuits Pro-One. With robust build quality, dual VCOs, and a rich filter, it offers a spectrum of warm and resonant tones that will satisfy many synth enthusiasts. However, the review highlights some shortcomings, particularly the lack of sturdy switches and limited MIDI functionality, which detract from the overall user experience. While it doesn’t quite match the original's pedigree, the Pro-1 is a compelling choice for those seeking to explore vintage sounds without breaking the bank.

Behringer Beat: PRO-1 Review - Synth and Software

synthandsoftware.com

Behringer's PRO-1 is a commendable homage to the classic Pro-One, delivering rich, analog sounds at an unbeatable price. Its authentic design, versatile modulation capabilities, and Eurorack compatibility make it a compelling choice for synth enthusiasts. However, it does lack some features like onboard effects and memory, which may deter purists. While it successfully captures the essence of the original, those seeking modern enhancements might find it wanting. Overall, it's a fantastic option for budget-conscious musicians who want a taste of vintage synth flavor without breaking the bank.

Damn you Behringer...

Behringer keeps cranking out these knock-offs and I keep shaking my head but also salivating a bit. I've had my eye on the Pro-1 and ultimately sprung for it because I was looking for something that could fill a niche in my setup to get some of those classic Skinny Puppy/Klinik/FLA/Mentallo & The Fixer/90s electro-type sounds and stand well on its own in a mostly raw un-effected format and sit well in a mix. The paraphonic mode was the icing on the cake. And so inexpensive! Can't wait to see what I conjure out of this guy.

A perfect replacement for my long ago sold SCI Pro One

This sounds exactly like I wanted it to. The interface is familiar to me. I love triggering the sequencer from the RD-8 or 707 or whatever else.

They did a bang up job cloning a vintage synth that I regret selling and is now too expensive to justify buying again.

Don't hesitate, invest in this synth!!

I must seem like a Behringer fanboy by now, but there's a good reason for that, they make dope synthesizers. The Pro-1 has a fat, warm, heavy, punchy sound. It's a lot of fun to use and best of all it works as it should. The tones I'm getting out of this one are nothing short of fresh! This is a must-have synthesizer!

jimmarchi1

you said 'dope' and 'fresh' in the same review.... I feel 15 again

christianburl

great sound, cheaply manufactured

pros - great control over oscillators, lfo is fun, filter sounds great

cons - side panels are plastic, there is a constant humming through the audio out that happens when midi is connected, bass could be warmer, mod matrix difficult to navigate.
