Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Behringer TD-3 AM Yellow Acid Smiley Edition.

Features and functionality

  • The -MO models include additional CV jacks for modulation, unlike the standard TD-3 models, which lack these extra control options.

    Source
  • The TD-3-MO offers additional attack/decay controls, FM control, and improved overdrive, expanding its sound-shaping capabilities beyond the standard TD-3.

    Source
  • The TD-3-MO's MIDI-controllable filter frequency can create unique sounds, like emulating percussion noises from "Watermelon Man" by Herbie Hancock.

    Source
  • The TD-3 features a thirteen-note chromatic keyboard, allowing octave shifts for each note input, providing flexibility in pattern playback.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The yellow TD-3’s filter might sound more aggressive compared to the black version, though differences are subtle and vary between units.

    Source
  • The TD-3-MO is likened to a "deep little mono synth" suitable for diverse musical contexts, while the standard TD-3 is ideal for those primarily seeking the acid sound.

    Source
  • Users note that the TD-3 sounds thin next to an RE-303, but the difference is negligible in solo use.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners note the analog nature of the TD-3 can lead to slight variations in sound quality and filter aggression across different units.

    Source
  • Programming the TD-3 requires multiple button presses for sequence entry, which some find cumbersome, though familiarity improves ease of use.

    Source
  • Some owners find the programming process cumbersome without auditory feedback, making note timing difficult to perfect without the desktop app.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Choosing less popular colors like blue or red can lead to cost savings, as they are functionally identical to other colors.

    Source
  • Reports of the TD-3 being seen as low as $121 using multiple coupons, showcasing potential for further discounts beyond standard pricing.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The TD-3 excels in producing the acid sound but is also noted for its presence in mixes due to accent and glissando features, making it versatile for various genres.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Recording the TD-3 into a DAW like Ableton is straightforward if the audio interface is set up correctly, allowing for seamless integration into digital workflows.

    Source
  • The free 'Synth Tool' app allows users to draw notes in a piano roll editor, simplifying the programming process compared to the onboard sequencer.

    Source

Build quality

  • The unit is described as very light and plastic, raising concerns about its long-term durability despite its affordability.

Great sounding TB-303 clone for just $150

Behringer made good TB-303 clones accessible to everybody, buy releasing the TD-3 for just $150.

The TD-3 is available in a variety of different colors, but the yellow special edition is the one you want. It just looks way better in yellow with a smiley, where other editions have the Behringer logo.

The TD-3 comes with a built in distortion MIDI and improved connectivity over the TB-303. USB, MIDI and 3.5mm analog connectors to connect to analog gear.

The programming of the TD-3 is - like the original TB-303 - quite cumbersome. My other clones (Aira TB-3, X0xb0x, Avalon) are way easier to program. However, the complicated way to program this machine can lead to happy accidents. Many say: "This is where the magic happens!"

The built quality is okay for the price, I guess. Of course, it's nowhere near the Avalon.

I'm going to be honest, I usually use it for MIDI to analog clockconversion at which it excels...

this is very hard, the only real downside is the low pattern length and I haven't figured out how to chain patterns, very nice sound and in built distortion is very good, very affordable and looks cool, good for acid techno
