Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Catalinbread SFT.

Features and functionality

  • The v2 model of the Catalinbread SFT has an external button for switching between modes, enhancing user convenience.

    Source
  • Treat the SFT like an amp due to its amp-simulating circuit, avoiding stacking with similar amp simulating pedals like the F55 to prevent tonal mush.

    Source
  • The SFT's Stones mode serves as a strong foundational tone for stacking other pedals on top.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Works well with neutral amps like Traynor Tube Amp and Katana Mini, letting the pedal's Ampeg-like character shine through.

    Source
  • Ideal for achieving desert rock/stoner rock tones, particularly for Sleep, Fu Manchu, and Kyuss sounds.

    Source
  • Pairing the SFT with a Klon style pedal like Wampler Tumnus mini can yield compressive tones in stoner mode, albeit with increased noise.

    Source
  • The SFT excels in recreating the "edge of breakup" clean tones, especially suitable for Faces and Stones sounds.

    Source
  • Owners find the SFT less versatile than Big Muff, primarily useful in specific styles like stoner rock.

    Source
  • Users find the SFT's Stones mode ideal for creating a solid base when unhappy with their amp sound, particularly for genres needing that particular tone.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners highlight its ability to capture Kyuss and QOTSA tones effectively when set in stoner mode.

    Source

Comparisons

  • When used with a clean pedal platform amp like Hamstead Artist 60T, the pedal's distortion is fully showcased.

    Source
  • The Stone Deaf PDF pedal is recommended for enhancing the SFT's bass without boosting 400-500hz, which aligns with QOTSA tones.

    Source
  • The SFT is described as a "jack of all trades, master of none," indicating it may not specialize as well as other pedals like the Big Muff.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • An EQ pedal or exotic EP boost can enhance the SFT's amp collapsing sound by adding clean bass.

Critic Reviews

REVIEWED: CATALINBREAD SFT VER. 2 AMPEG FOUNDATION OVERDRIVE PEDAL - Mixdown Magazine

mixdownmag.com.au

The Catalinbread SFT V2 impresses with its versatility and vintage tone emulation, capturing both the gritty fuzz of stoner rock and the smooth overdrive of 70s Rolling Stones. While the toggle button for switching modes may not allow seamless transitions mid-performance, the pedal's rich tonal output and compatibility with various setups make it a strong contender for musicians seeking a vintage sound palette. Its standout feature, the stoner mode, transforms clean amps into fuzz-laden beasts, making it a worthwhile addition to any pedalboard.

Best distortion I've ever owned.

Wow. This thing is super versatile. The stones/stoner switch is such a useful feature. I love using the stones mode for more of a clean boost, but I usually keep it on stoner mode with the gain blasting. This pedal is lethal.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Gain and treble: cranked Volume and Bass: 50%

T

Great dynamic overdrive settings as well as full on fuzztortion

The only thing that would make this better would be a secondary switch to alternate between the stones and stoner mode, but that would require separate volume knobs, because the Stoner mode can be perceived to be louder

The best thing about stones mode is the dynamic, not even talk volume knob, in the right spot, this can respond differently by playing soft/with fingers and by digging in with a pick

The stone mode/stoner mode options suggest that this pedal is suitable for use in rock, stoner and even blues... It has two incredible facets to use: either as a tubescreamer-style overdrive or as a fuzz. In the future, I would like them to incorporate an external switch to activate the stone/stoner mode.
