Epiphone S400 Six String (MM Oct 86)

muzines.co.uk

The Epiphone S400 is a mixed bag that grows on you with time. On the plus side, its familiar body shape and solid pickups deliver a sweet sound, especially with the neck/middle combo that retains high frequencies. However, the setup leaves something to be desired, particularly the tremolo system, which lacks tuning stability. The neck is initially bulky but becomes comfortable, and while the fretting is well-finished, the action could be lower. The aesthetics are hit-or-miss, with some cosmetic flaws, especially in the pickup area. Ultimately, for its price point, the S400 offers decent performance but requires some user patience for optimal enjoyment.

Could be a decent shredder guitar after a pickup swap.

Epiphone at one point produced "fender style" guitars and basses, the S(stratocaster) series for guitar and the Accu(precision) series for bass. The "explorer headstock" version of the S series guitars are pretty decent for the most part, they are pretty cool compared to starter guitars nowadays. The volume knob sits way too close to the strings, this wouldn't be an issue but it's a push/ pull knob so that is a bit of a design hiccup. The neck is actually comfortable and great for heavy styles of playing, the body is also pretty nice. Unfortunately the electronics sound awful, clean tones are passable but that is a buzzkill because high gain tones sound really lackluster and sloppy. If you just swapped the stock pickups for some EMGS, Seymour Duncans, Dimarzios, etc. It would probably make for a great shredder guitar for those on a budget!
