Description

Unleash your inner rock legend with the Epiphone Firebird, a modern nod to the iconic 1963 Gibson classic. Designed for the discerning musician, this solid-body electric guitar combines vintage aesthetics with contemporary playability. The Firebird's sleek mahogany body provides a rich midrange and exceptional sustain, while the SlimTaper neck—crafted from a blend of mahogany and walnut—ensures effortless movement across the 22-fret Indian laurel fingerboard.

Equipped with a pair of ProBucker humbuckers, this guitar delivers the potent, snarling tone that has become a staple for rock enthusiasts. For those who demand reliability, the Firebird is fitted with premium hardware, including a LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece for enhanced sustain and stable tuning performance. Grover Mini 18:1 ratio tuners provide precise tuning adjustments, ensuring your sound remains consistent through every performance.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Epiphone Firebird.

Build quality

  • Some users report minor construction inconsistencies, such as uneven raised areas on the wings, although these do not affect structural integrity.

    Source
  • Some users replace the stock chrome pickup rings with Mojotone nickel rings for aesthetic and durability reasons.

    Source
  • Some owners note the Epiphone Firebird's flat headstock with mini Grovers, preferring the traditional banjo tuners for authenticity.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Despite its affordable reputation, some consider the IBG Firebird's price point high compared to used Gibsons, though deals can still be found.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Sharp edges on the nut's fretboard side can cause discomfort during quick position changes, suggesting a need for smoothing or replacement.

    Source
  • Owners recommend switching to 9s from the stock 10s for easier bending, as the stiff neck can make string bending more challenging.

    Source
  • The neck-through construction with sandwiched hardwoods contributes to a stable, chunky neck that offers substantial sustain but requires careful truss rod adjustments for optimal playability.

    Source
  • A few users report initial issues with nut placement affecting playability on the first fret, but minor fixes like super glue can resolve these.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The toggle switch can be notably stiff, with a hard click into position, prompting some users to replace it for smoother operation.

    Source
  • The Epiphone Firebird features FB720 pickups, which are authentic Firebird pickups unlike the ceramic 495 mini-hums previously used by Gibson.

    Source
  • Unlike earlier models, the new Epiphone Firebird comes with metal hardware and Grover tuners, offering reliable hardware at a lower price point.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners have upgraded with DiMarzio PG-13 Mini Bridge Humbucker Pickups for reduced noise and a hotter output.

    Source
  • To achieve a fatter, dirty sound, users suggest adjusting the tone knob to around 4 and increasing the amp's volume rather than relying on the guitar's pickups alone.

    Source
  • Users suggest Lollar pickups as a potential upgrade to enhance tonal quality for the Epiphone Firebird.

    Source

User experience

  • The Firebird's unique length gives the perception of a different scale length, aiding comfort for those used to shorter guitars like a Telecaster.

    Source
  • One owner notes that the Indian Laurel fretboard has tiny "potholes" and recommends applying mineral oil for maintenance.

    Source
  • Reports indicate the Firebird is heavy yet well-balanced, making it comfortable for extended playing sessions.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The neck-thru design enhances access to higher frets, making the Firebird suitable for genres like classic rock and metal, offering a deeper tone compared to a Les Paul.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some owners express that the Epiphone Firebird provides better balance and lacks neck dive compared to older Gibson models.

Epiphone Inspired By Gibson 1963 Firebird I & V review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The Epiphone Firebird impresses with its stunning looks and phenomenal sound, drawing inspiration from Gibson's iconic designs. The Firebird V offers versatility and better balance, while the Firebird I is praised for its simplicity and robust tone. However, the Firebird I's neck heaviness and the need for strap locks are minor drawbacks. The hefty price tag is a point of contention, nearing Gibson's own offerings, but the overall quality and playability make these guitars a worthwhile investment for enthusiasts.

Epiphone Firebird Electric Guitar Review 2025

laceyguitars.com

The Epiphone Firebird earns respect for its striking design and affordability, serving as a commendable alternative to the pricier Gibson model. While its mahogany body and glossy finish impress visually, the guitar falls short of Gibson’s renowned sound, with its ProBucker humbuckers offering decent performance but lacking power and distortion. The neck-through construction and SlimTaper C-profile ensure ease of play, but the sound can get muddy with distortion. Ideal for classic rock, blues, and jazz, it’s a solid rhythm guitar, but not for those seeking pristine clarity. Overall, it's a visually appealing and versatile instrument, albeit with some sonic compromises.

Finally an affordable Firebird

This has to be the best my favourite of the 2020 Epiphones. It feels very high quality and sounds like a dream. There are no issues at all with fret ect., that many others of these guitars seem to have.

"La Pájara Pinta"

Love the Firebird design; original and very rockin´. As a slide guitar it´s good but I bought it because I needed a guitar of my style. It has x2 Alnico Classic Humbuckers with a hard (that sometimes it´s horrible to play!!) neck.

Epiphone Firebird Custom Shop Limited Edition

A Firebird that's more aggressive than usual because it has two humbuckers. Very rock and roll and ideal for riffs and solos.

ROCK AND ROLL POWER!

It's a rock and roll freak! Once you start to play it, you can never stop!

jimmarchi1

is yours neck-thru or set-neck construction? Does it have full-size epi humbuckers or proper firebird mini humbuckers without polepieces?

ricardo_jorge_rocha

Unfortunately, it's the recent Epi construction: set neck, with full size humbuckers. ;)
