Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gibson Billie Joe Armstrong Les Paul Junior Single Cut Electric Guitar.

Features and functionality

  • The Billie Joe Armstrong model features a noise-cancelling H90 pickup, which is a rehash of the P100 used in earlier reissues.

    Source
  • The H90 pickup is praised for maintaining a P90 twang while providing hum-canceling features, suitable for punk and djenty riffs.

    Source
  • The H90 pickup is described as featuring a dummy coil configuration similar to Dimarzio's HS single coils, providing hum cancellation while maintaining a classic P-90 tone.

    Source
  • The H90 pickup, though hum-canceling, is reported to be loud and capable of producing a raw, noisy sound reminiscent of traditional single coils.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Unlike the Custom Shop models, the BJA uses a multi-piece body and a '60s Slim taper neck, differentiating it from other Les Paul Juniors.

    Source
  • While some prefer the BJA model, others opt for the standard LP Jr. for its different finish and lower price point.

    Source
  • Some users question the $600 price difference compared to a standard LP Jr. with P90s, emphasizing the BJA's distinct pickup and case as primary differentiators.

    Source

Build quality

  • Historic specs like the neck joint shelf make the BJA a unique choice, reflecting features out of production in the USA for some time.

    Source
  • The ebony finish is thin and can show wood grain inconsistencies, giving the guitar a unique character that some owners appreciate.

    Source
  • The silver model's finish is noted for its thinness, allowing the wood grain to show through more distinctly than in photos.

    Source
  • The model's unique case is noted for its higher quality compared to standard LP Jr. cases, adding to the signature model's appeal.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The BJA model, considered a VOS at half the price, loses uniqueness since Gibson reissued a similar Junior model in 2011.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Some owners modify the H90 pickup by clipping the wire joining the two coils to effectively create a P90.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report the neck's slim profile as a preferred feature over standard Juniors, enhancing playability.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The translucent finish on the ebony model allows wood grain visibility, adding aesthetic appeal and character.

Critic Reviews

Gibson Billie Joe Armstrong Les Paul Junior review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The Gibson Billie Joe Armstrong Les Paul Junior impresses with its great weight, excellent playability, and a unique hum-cancelling dog-ear P-90 pickup that delivers clear and polite tones. However, the guitar's premium price may deter some, especially given minor finish issues and sharp body edges. While not flawless, it remains a compelling choice for fans of Armstrong and those seeking a stripped-down guitar with a bit of rock flair.

Gibson Billie Joe Armstrong Les Paul Junior review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Okay, it's a one-trick pony, but it does that trick very well indeed; expensive it may be, but there's no denying the Armstrong's charms. The Gibson Billie Joe Armstrong Les Paul Junior impresses with its great, punchy sound and solid build, staying true to its rock 'n' roll roots. While its minimalist design might not appeal to everyone, and the lack of versatility due to its single pickup may be a drawback, it excels as a straightforward rock tool. Yes, it's on the pricier side, but for fans of Green Day or pure, unadulterated guitar tone, it's a solid investment.

P-90 best single of all time

The guitar has a body that fits in the body, an extremely comfortable neck, and the sound that comes out of that instrument, it is something that makes me ecstatic. Has a wonderful sustain, with mahogany body, a great option for those looking for a guitar with vintage sound and easy playability.

"For me, I think that, you know, Les Paul Juniors have more of a rock 'n roll sound just because it's the true sound of a guitar. The sound that I go for is that real punchy mid-range kind of sound."
