CONS

  • Relatively difficult to find, especially specific older models.

  • No back panel, making internal cleaning challenging.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gibson Les Paul Supreme.

Build quality

  • The Supreme features a carved neck heel and compound radius, enhancing playability and comfort over the traditional models.

    Source
  • The new Supreme lacks the double-bound, carved, and figured back, which was a standout feature of the original, impacting its aesthetic appeal and craftsmanship.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Supreme model has an ebony fingerboard, which is preferred by some for its smoother feel compared to rosewood.

    Source
  • The 2023 Supreme offers weight relief, which some players feel might affect the traditional Les Paul growl, though it's appreciated for reducing the guitar's overall weight.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users prefer the Les Paul Standard due to its more traditional features, while others appreciate the modern touches and aesthetics of the Supreme.

    Source
  • The current model resembles a Les Paul Modern with different inlays and a figured top, deviating from the original Supreme's design.

    Source
  • The new Supreme is likened to a "dressed up Les Paul Modern" with coil splitting and a carved heel joint, contrasting with the more vintage Standard models.

    Source

User experience

  • A previous model of the Supreme had chambered bodies and figured backs, which some owners found appealing for both sound and appearance.

    Source
  • Owners of both 2008 and 2023 models describe them as very different guitars, with the newer being more akin to a "Modern Plus" than a true Supreme.

    Source
  • Owners who have tried both Standard and Supreme models often decide based on immediate feel and sound preference, as in-store availability can be limited due to pre-orders.

    Source
  • Many Supremes sell quickly after arrival in stores, suggesting high demand despite mixed reviews on the 2023 lineup.

    Source
  • Some users who've played both the Slash Signature and Supreme mention the former retains the iconic Les Paul growl more distinctly, possibly due to different pickup configurations.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The Supreme's gold hardware is not favored by all, with some users recommending the Standard for those who dislike the aesthetic.

    Source
  • The absence of a control cavity and the simpler inlay on newer models suggest cost-cutting measures compared to the original Supreme.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Wiring in older models required intricate routing through the input jack due to the lack of a rear cavity, complicating maintenance and modifications.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Despite challenges, some owners managed to fit EMG pickups, but space constraints made installing a 9V battery extremely difficult.

Gibson Les Paul Supreme Guitar Review Limited Edition

tonymckenzie.com

The Gibson Les Paul Supreme impresses with its exquisite craftsmanship and unique design, boasting a hollowed body for enhanced resonance and gold-colored frets for a touch of luxury. This limited edition model offers superb sound quality and excellent value, making it a standout for blues and classic rock enthusiasts. However, the neck's rake angle might pose a challenge, affecting string alignment. Despite this, the guitar's overall quality rivals top brands like PRS, making it a worthy investment for those seeking a distinctive Les Paul experience.

The Gibson Les Paul Supreme is officially back – and the most expensive non-Custom LP is as luxurious, lightweight and versatile as ever | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Gibson Les Paul Supreme 2023 marks a lavish return with its AAA-figured maple tops and luxurious finishes. This model is crafted for versatility with coil-splits, Ultra-Modern weight relief, and a contoured heel for enhanced playability. The dual and triple-humbucker configurations provide a wide palette of tones, though purists might balk at the weight relief feature. The inclusion of modern features like push/pull tone controls adds radical sound capabilities. While its price tag is steep, making it the most expensive non-Custom Shop Les Paul, it offers a unique blend of classic craftsmanship and modern innovations.

Ever since I was 12 it's been a childhood fantasy to own/play a Gibson Les Paul supreme. When I was 18 I finally bought this model used for a little less than $1500 at local music store Uptown Music in Keizer OR. The previous owner had sanded the neck so mine has a natural wood neck finish. This axe has amazing cleans & beautiful rock/metal distortion. I use neck pickup volume very low for clean tone, then switch to bridge pickup with volume almost all the way up for distortion. It's built/designed similar to a violin. The back is arched like a violin. Great aesthetic but no back panel means you can't clean the insides though I've never needed to. Current tuning: Drop C.

King of the throne

I have to say there's nothing more beautiful and prestigious. Just about everything on this guitar is something of an acquired taste. Relatively difficult to find for this specific model. You get what you pay for with this Gibson. The playability, sounds and looks are all there
