Description

The Gibson Les Paul SG Standard is a legendary instrument that captures the essence of rock history. Revered by icons like Santana and Townshend, this guitar is a testament to the enduring appeal of its timeless design and sound. The lightweight, double-horned mahogany body not only offers exceptional sustain but also ensures comfort for extended play. Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gibson Les Paul SG Standard.

Features and functionality

  • The SG's toggle switch placement avoids interference during energetic performances, unlike the Les Paul's potentially problematic position for heavy strummers.

    Source
  • The SG 61's lighter weight and upper fret access are frequently highlighted, with some models weighing as little as 6 pounds.

    Source
  • The SG is noted for its 24-fret neck playability, offering more fretting options compared to guitars with fewer frets.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • SG guitars excel in alt rock/emo with tighter lows and sharper attack, complementing genres needing mid-focused tones and high fret access.

    Source
  • SGs are often described as having a "nasally and mid-rangy" sound, which could be a consideration for players seeking a specific tonal signature.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners find wider straps (2.5-3 inches, preferably suede) enhance the SG's stability, reducing neck-dive and improving playing comfort.

    Source
  • The SG is noted for its ability to achieve Strat-like tones, which are less attainable with a Les Paul, offering a unique tonal versatility.

    Source
  • The SG is praised for its comfort, feeling like an extension of the body due to its light weight and closer body positioning.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The SG is noted for its lightweight build, making it favorable over the Les Paul for physically dynamic performances and ease of movement on stage.

    Source
  • The SG Standard 61 and LP Standard 60s share the same pickups and neck profile, offering similar tonal characteristics but differing in body balance and weight.

    Source
  • The SG's neck placement can feel awkwardly left-shifted compared to the Les Paul, requiring some adjustment for players used to different ergonomics.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Some 61 SGs have necks that are too thin for certain players, feeling wide despite their slim taper design, with a preferred thickness of 1" at the 12th fret.

    Source

Build quality

  • Modern SGs reportedly have better neck stability compared to earlier models, addressing past concerns of structural weakness at the neck joint.

    Source
  • Some owners find the SG's construction too thin, describing it as akin to a "2x4 with pickups," which may feel unsubstantial to some players.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Replacing the pickguard with a wide bevel version and polishing the rosewood fretboard with fine grit sandpaper and F-Oil can enhance the SG's aesthetics and playability.

Deryck Whibley writes on the Sum 41 page:

"I love this guitar. It's a '62 Gibson Les Paul. When they first introduced this guitar in '61 it was supposed to be the new Les Paul. it wasn't called an SG until 1963, so for the first year and a half you can find SG's that say Les Paul on them. This one sounds great. i've used this on "Walking Disaster" and "Pull The Curtain." I bought this around the time we were making Underclass Hero and used it throughout that record. I haven't used it much since then, but looking at it now makes me want to use it more on this new record.

I''ll let you know what songs it makes it onto!"
