Reviews

PROS

  • Combines slicer/octave effects for dynamic sound

  • Features tap tempo and freeze functions

  • Offers extensive sound modes and rhythmic patterns

  • Enables creation of electronic loops with ease

  • Can function as an advanced tremolo with step sequencer

  • Allows for orchestral to choppy pulsing sound transformations

  • Real-time adjustment and change of instant-sampled sequences

CONS

  • Sequences can feel random and hard to replicate

  • Hold feature and overall operation can be unpredictable

  • Some users find MIDI implementation and preset interface clunky

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Hologram Electronics Dream Sequence.

Features and functionality

  • Owners utilize the Dream Sequence's ramp waveshape to create unique soundscapes by setting a slow tempo and the slowest sequence possible (2), revealing large note gaps.

    Source
  • The Dream Sequence lacks a master volume, complicating level balancing, and the overdrive circuit cannot be turned off, coloring even the "dry" signal.

    Source
  • The Dream Sequence allows for personal customization of patterns and octaves, providing more complex passages than the Boss SL-20.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Combining the Dream Sequence with a drum machine, synchronized via MIDI clock, enhances rhythmic elements while affecting guitar or synth, not percussive sounds.

    Source
  • Dream Sequence excels when affecting a frozen chord, adding movement and depth, often paired with effects like Dark Star or Count to Five for richness.

    Source
  • Ideal for solo guitar or minimalist music, the pedal creates a "separate" effect, adding a synth-like layer to your signal.

    Source
  • Particularly effective for ambient music, the Dream Sequence shines when users create personalized patterns and recorded movements.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners automate drive and tone movements on the Dream Sequence, creating dynamic gain swells and movement with sequences, though the tone control is noted as basic.

    Source
  • Users find it challenging to use spontaneously; it requires writing music specifically suited to its effects, which may not inspire all players.

    Source
  • The pedal requires reading the manual to fully utilize its features, with some owners reporting a learning curve to unlock its full potential.

    Source

Comparisons

  • While the Microcosm is praised for its ambient capabilities, the Dream Sequence provides a more rhythmic, aggressive style, especially effective when synced to a drum machine.

    Source
  • The octaves have a glitchy quality similar to the BitQuest, not replacing the precision of a POG or Pitchfork for octave effects.

    Source
  • Unlike the Boss SL-20, the Dream Sequence can create user-defined patterns with chosen octaves, offering unique customization options.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Using a Boss LS-2 line selector can help manage the always-on overdrive issue, although some feel this workaround is unjustified given the pedal's price.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Hologram pedals maintain high resale value, minimizing financial risk when purchased used.

cool and weird

very cool sounding pedal with lots of different sound options. tempo syncing is brilliant, and you can create massive rhythm patterns with it. MIDI implementation is a bit funky, and does choke sometimes. Also the visual interface for dealing with presets is a little clunky.

reaper25

Next level hardware effects for the future.

Crazy arpeggiator, makes my guitar sound orchestral but also get classic choppy pulsing narcotic sounds I am so fond of from Spacemen 3. It can also instant-samples then turns your sample into a sequencer which you can adjust and change in real time.
