  • Tone knob adjustments can result in poor sound quality beyond 12 o'clock

  • Described as too "broken-sounding" for some tastes

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Ibanez Tone-Lok FZ7 Fuzz.

Features and functionality

  • The Damage Control feature replicates a torn speaker sound and, with a boost pedal, can produce controllable octave fuzz via the guitar's volume knob.

    Source
  • Circuit design includes input buffer, opamp gain stages, and a distinctive tone control with four gyrators.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Shares tonal similarities with the Ibanez Standard Fuzz from the 70s, though circuit relations are unclear.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Effective for creating compressed fuzz tones to drive amps for additional compression, offering a more open sound when used alone.

    Source
  • The FZ7 is favored for its unique tonal characteristics that differ from traditional Muff variants, making it a versatile addition to a fuzz pedal collection.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The on/off switch is a SPST momentary switch, despite having four legs for mechanical stability; two pairs of pins are used for this purpose.

    Source
  • Inconsistent switching may be due to a worn foam or rubber piece that fails to properly engage the switch.

    Source
  • Issues with the flip-flop bypass circuit can sometimes be attributed to components like a capacitor or transistor drifting out of spec.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Replacing the tiny original switch with a panel-mount momentary switch has been successfully done for improved durability and functionality.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report the FZ7 performs better with single coil pickups, with the 0% damage mode preferred for compatibility with various musical styles.

    Source

Build quality

  • Contrary to assumptions, the FZ7's enclosure is not plastic, providing a more robust and durable feel than expected.

A nasty fuzz box.

Huge fan of fuzz pedals in general and the dirtier the better almost. This pedal has three tone-lok knobs that control drive, tone and level. Once you've locked in the sound you want you can go ahead and press those knobs back into the pedal so they don't change during transport.

The fuzz itself is dirty but the tone comes through quite clearly making it so that you can actually play solos as well as power chords without trouble. Don't try playing chords however but if you're using fuzz you're probably not looking to do that either.

Special features of the pedal is the damage control. You can choose between 0%, 10% and 100% damage. What this switch does is make the signal cut out and crackle more or less easily depending on the % chosen.

The box itself is made out of metal and it has a satisfying click when you engage or disengage the pedal.

Overall if you like dirty fuzz tones and can pick it up at a good price I think you're gonna like this one.

ABSOLUTELY underrated

I had a Shinei Superfuzz and the 100% damage setting on the Ibanez pedal sounds almost like that on the mid focus setting. The 0% and 10% damage setting is almost like a bigmuff ... compared to the orginals the Ibanez one has less Subbass and less topend between 4k and 8k so some amps sounded better with the ibanez and some with the originals ... just try it !

Gold for some ears

Tired of fatty fuzzy sounds? You look for something similar to the boss ones? This is your choice. For 50 bucks you can achieve a nice pedal with some cool option. The "Damage" control adds a sort of 8-bit-octavish sound, really nasty. The pedal has a nice tone knob that adds low ends and mids until 12 o'clock, after that sounds really awful. If you are searching for a robotic-digital-glassed sound into a fuzz pedal, this is your choice.
