Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Ibanez Tone-Lok PM7 Phase Modulator Pedal.

Features and functionality

  • The PM7 offers three distinct wave options: standard, square, and ring modulation, with the square wave creating a unique popping sound adjustable with the "Manual" control.

    Source
  • The Tone-Lok knobs can be sunk into the pedal for locking settings, preventing accidental changes during use.

    Source
  • The PM7's LFO can be pushed into audio rate territory, effectively creating a ring modulation effect that maintains pitch better than frequency-based ring modulation.

    Source
  • Offers sine, square, and sawtooth waveforms, with modes for 4-stage and two different 6-stage modulations, providing a broad palette of phaser and synth-like sounds.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The pedal can mimic Phase 100 sounds and achieves step-sequencer and ring modulation effects, though the ring modulator mode includes an unintentional volume boost.

    Source
  • Owners find the square wave function particularly compelling for creating unique, non-traditional phaser sounds.

    Source

Comparisons

  • It's been noted that the PM7 is not a budget alternative to the Lovetone Doppelganger or Moog MF-103, despite some claims online.

    Source
  • The PM7 is noted for its versatility, especially in comparison to the more straightforward CF7, which lacks the PM7’s range of experimental sounds.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Owners highlight a potential issue with the pedal's jacks cutting the signal, which can be resolved by cleaning with Deoxit and inserting a cable multiple times.

    Source

User experience

  • The pedal's bypass function is criticized for allowing the LFO to remain audible even when switched off, suggesting placement in its own loop for better control.

    Source
  • Some users discover self-oscillating sounds, adding to the pedal's experimental appeal.

    Source
  • The PM7's control versatility is compared to high-end brands like Meris, indicating a wide range of creative possibilities.

    Source
  • Some users describe the pedal as ideal for those who enjoy experimenting with unconventional, "terrible" sounds beyond traditional phasing.

    Source

Other

  • The PM7 is reportedly rare in Europe, especially in the UK, making it a sought-after item for collectors in that region.

    Source

Build quality

  • The physical durability is questioned, with reports of switches and potentiometers failing despite the pedal's robust appearance.

Phase Heaven

I use both 4-stage and 6-stage phasers and love having the capability to switch between the two. Not only does the PM7 have that switch, it also has a waveform switch and a couple extra knobs for even more wacky and wild sounds. The subtle phase sounds it creates are very pleasing, and the sci fi spaceship sounds it makes are super fun and actually usable.

Also the knobs pop in and out? Kick ass.

Not true bypass.
