    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The Studio .22+ requires regular tube changes every 2-3 years to maintain optimal performance and tone quality.

    Source
  • Owners recommend ensuring the Studio .22+ has had a cap job in the last decade and addressing heat issues to prevent soldering problems.

    Source
  • The Studio .22's four pre-amp tubes contribute to its high operating temperature, necessitating careful heat management to prevent potential issues.

Critic Reviews

Mesa Boogie Studio .22 (IM Nov 86)

muzines.co.uk

The Mesa/Boogie Studio .22 is a powerhouse in a compact package, delivering the legendary Boogie sound at a more accessible price point. Despite its unassuming 22-watt rating, it boasts remarkable volume and a wide tonal range, making it a formidable contender for both rhythm and lead playing. However, its simplified design comes at the cost of versatility—lacking the more extensive controls and programmability of its pricier siblings, like the Mark III. The footswitch also leaves something to be desired, with a noisy click that could interfere in studio settings. Still, for those seeking the iconic Boogie tone without the premium price, the Studio .22 is a compelling option, albeit with some trade-offs in control and features.

Best preamp - gets those vintage mesa tones as MEGA cleans!

Love this preamp! Gets those Nirvana and Hole cleans, which I'm fond of, but gets those vintage-esque mesa tones that everyone knows of from the old foo fighters records and alice in chains... Great preamp, original 1990 version.

Awesome preamp, cleans are amazing

Awesome preamp! Cleans sound really nice, but the distorted channel isn't as good as the clean. I think it's becuase mine is from '90 and needs the tubes replaced lol :D

jimmarchi1

both channels should sound good assuming you like a fender clean and the EARLY mesa dirt sound... its more of a like it or don't thing, the studio preamp does what its designed to do. Its just dated. If it sounds weak try the retube you think you might need. Maybe take it somewhere for service too. Might need new caps by now, tough to say.

karl321

the clean channel sounds better with a designated distortion pedal, than the distortion channel.

Kurt only used the Mesa Boogie Studio. 22 Combo Amp once. Kurt mainly used the Mesa/Boogie Studio Preamp with a Crown power amp and a variety of Marshall cabinets. In live performances, his Crown power amp was eventually replaced with 2 Crest power amps,

The Only time Kurt used the Mesa Boogie Studio .22 Combo Amp was on October 24, 1991 at Off The Record, San Diego, CA. This was supposed to be an acoustic show, with instruments supplied by the record store, but since they didn't have any left-handed guitars, the band ended up using their own instruments and playing an electric set. So the Mesa Boogie Studio.22 Combo Amp Belonged to the Record Store.
