Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Roadster Combo Amp.

User experience

  • Many owners find the Roadster combo excessively heavy at approximately 105 lbs, deterring use for live gigs.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate the Roadster's ability to deliver thicker, heavier tones, with some mentioning the amp's proficiency in achieving a scooped mids sound.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Roadster is regarded as smoother and darker than the Triple Rectifier, but boosting the presence and treble can counteract this.

    Source
  • The Roadster's sound may appear "muffled" when paired with Mesa V30 speakers; using external cabinets can alter this perception.

    Source
  • The Roadster is seen as more versatile than the Rev G, which excels in immediate high-gain punch.

    Source
  • The Roadster is noted for a low-mid focus, ideal for "chugging," whereas the Marshall JVM has an upper-mid bark and can become flubby at low frequencies.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Using a Tube Screamer or Xotic BB Preamp in front significantly enhances the modern tone, especially for metalcore.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Channel switching can cause a loud pop; cycling through channels after powering up can mitigate this issue.

    Source
  • The amp's reverb send is placed before the FX loop, which might not suit all musical styles, particularly metalcore.

    Source
  • The Roadster's clean channel is based on the Lone Star series, known for its high-quality, versatile clean tones.

    Source
  • The Roadster offers 4 channels with a 3-way voicing switch per channel, plus 50/100 watt options, FX loop, reverb, solo boost, and a large spring reverb tank.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Frequent oxidation on 1/4" input jacks can lead to signal issues; cleaning involves working a plug in and out rapidly.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Roadster is favored for heavy ambient styles like those of The Contortionist, due to its tonal versatility.

    Source
  • Despite the Roadster's weight, it's praised for live performance in thrash and hardcore settings.

    Source

Build quality

  • Some versions may lack side handles, impacting its portability despite its heavy weight, reported around 100 lbs.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Acquiring a Roadster at a good deal is appealing, but potential future service needs could negate the initial savings.

Perfect

All channels are voiced beautifully, impeccable compression and feel. When I got it, the tubes had been replaced with the "Personal Fave" option from JJ, which includes 6V6S and KT77 power tubes, GZ 34 rectifier tubes, and new preamp tubes. I kept this, and I couldn't be happier--it runs at about 40-50 watts and sounds great no matter the volume. But goddamn is it heavy!

Superb amp

This is the only amp I'll need for a very long time. High quality distortion. Small enough for easy mobility, powerful enough for any small venue.
