Critic Reviews

Microtech Gefell M300

soundonsound.com

The Microtech Gefell M300 shines as a versatile small-diaphragm condenser microphone, boasting impressive high SPL handling and a warm tonal quality. Its elegant design and superior low-frequency extension make it a standout in comparisons with competitors like the Neumann KM184. While it offers a slightly darker sound profile, this might appeal to those seeking a less bright option. The M300's build quality and precise stereo matching further enhance its appeal for studio and live applications. However, the review mentions no significant drawbacks, making it a top recommendation for serious audio professionals. If you're in the market for a premium microphone, the M300 deserves a spot on your shortlist.

Gefell UM92.1 and M300 Review

recordinghacks.com

Microtech Gefell's M300 impresses with its robust construction and exceptional sound quality, making it a strong contender against industry standards. This small diaphragm condenser shines on cymbals and acoustic guitars, delivering a clear, detailed sound without unwanted self-noise. Its high SPL handling means it can take on even the loudest sources without distortion. However, while the M300 excels in many areas, it lacks pad and low-frequency roll-off options, which some users might expect at its price point. Despite this, the M300's reliability and performance make it a worthy investment for serious musicians.

Field Test: Microtech Gefell M 300 Condenser Mic

mixonline.com

Microtech Gefell's M300 condenser mic showcases a solid build and aesthetic appeal, delivering an impressive high-end response ideal for acoustic guitar and percussion. However, it can be overly bright in certain applications, particularly with drum kits and orchestral setups, which may not suit every engineer's taste. The stereo bar design lacks versatility, making it challenging to position effectively without a boom stand. At $1,200 per pair, the M300s are a worthy investment for specialized uses, but potential buyers should consider their specific recording needs to ensure this mic aligns with their sound preferences.

Used on Anthem of the Peaceful Army, as stated by mix engineer Al Sutton in this January 2019 Sound on Sound interview.

(...) "I take the Glyn Johns setup as my basis, with an overhead and a side mic equidistant from the snare — I use two drum sticks to measure the distance. I used to use two Mesanovic M2 ribbons for this, but now use two Neumann U67 mics. In addition, my kick mic is the AKG D36, and my snare mics are the Shure SM57 and Neumann Gefell M300, held together by an X clip. I have a mic pointing at the side of the snare which often is called the 'wurst mic' [a term coined by German engineer Moses Schneider for a saturated lo-fi drum mic that delivers a sausage-shaped waveform — Ed.]. I used to use the Neumann UM57 for that, but now it's the Sennheiser MD441. It's really pointy and effected-sounding, and technically you can use that mic for your entire drum sound. My room mics are two Mesonovic ribbons, in a Blumlein setup. All drum mics went through the API, straight into Pro Tools."
