My Secret Weapon...
The Michael Joly Engineering Hulk 990 is my studio's Swiss Army Knife. It's essentially a gutted and modded MXL 990 with all of the electronics and windscreen replaced. Michael uses his custom MJE-K47 capsule in this microphone and it sounds excellent on vocals, acoustic guitars, and pianos. I've also used it on cellos and saxophones with beautiful sounding results. This microphone is engineered to be sort of a U 87 Ai type clone, but it honestly beats out the Neumann in my opinion and I consistently have vocalists in my studio raving about it and asking why their vocals sound so amazing through my vocal chain. The best part about it is that it's $429 and you can order one directly from Michael Joly at http://www.oktavamodshop.com.
