worse than a crack habit

spent 5 years building mine from spare parts. was worth the wait. most powerful sounding synth/workstation i have. even tracking into it imparts a very powerful and forward sound. no need for this review the countless albums made on it are enough. if you have disposable income and time to blow..... get one.

"On my side of the stage I've got the Synclavier, which is used mostly for string and voice sounds as well as the pure tones. For example, the intro to 'Money For Nothing' is played on the Synclavier sequencer. My other main keyboard is the Yamaha DX1. I love that synth, it's definitely one of the greatest keyboards around. You obviously have to know a lot about programming to use it properly, and it is very complicated, but if you can grasp the system it's really lovely."

"I’m probably one of the last people on Earth who uses this thing called a Synclavier which was invented in the '60s by three professors from Dartmouth University... the main instrument of my set-up is the Synclavier and that’s nine years of The X-Files plus movies. There are a lot of buttons on it, but it is lightning fast and it cost as much as a house when I bought it in 1986." - from Mark Snow's interview with Mandy News.

"I used to own a Synclavier II and of course it was an old 16-bit machine with FM synthesis. It didn't have MIDI but the great thing about the Synclavier was that the FM synthesis strings and horns and a lot of their other sounds were so bizarre and so wild and so fat and thick that it really had a character of it's own and I haven't seen a keyboard match that until this Kurzweil series came out."

"The Synclavier is owned by our producer, Mike Thorne, who's been using it since it was a university research machine, so he's very familiar with it. We used it for some straightforward samples — we spent one great afternoon smashing milk bottles — but I think the most interesting use we put it to was as a storage and retrieval device for arrangement purposes. We used it to move whole choruses around in a song, do harmonies to Jimi's voice, stuff like that. The 12-inch of Why has a lot of that on. That use of this kind of technology is much more advanced in America than it is here."

Kashif is listed as one of the original champions of the (hardware) Synclavier in the manual for the Arturia Synclavier V... an atypical source, sure... but one that will be available till the end of time in one way or another.
