Rex and the Bass: Pignose Legendary 7-100 Guitar Amplifier Review

rexbass.com

The Pignose 7-100 is a charmingly portable amp that delivers a dirty crunch perfect for rock and blues enthusiasts, though it falls short of providing clean tones as advertised. Its simplicity, affordability, and decent volume make it a solid choice for practice, especially with its vintage design and unique pig-snout knob. Despite its lack of auxiliary input for jamming along with tracks, the Pignose 7-100 remains a nostalgic piece of equipment that offers great value for its price, appealing to those who appreciate its gritty sound and straightforward functionality.

Much more than the sum of it's parts...

Beginners will be drawn to the whistles and bells of modern portable digital modelling amps but Pro's will appreciate the pignose's zen like simplicity and the warmth of it's old school analogue transistor circuitry. The Pignose is now my go-to portable amp despite the fact that I already have the popular Roland Microcube and Vox DA-5. Besides my guitar, I primarily use the pignose for filthy Chicago style harmonica, which my digital amps just can't seem to process without nasty dissonant overtones. The pignose handles the crazy harmonica signal waveform effortlessly, and delivers a presentable harmonica honk directly from my Bottle o Blues harmonica mic. Distortion is controlled by balancing the ratio between the mic (input) volume, and amp (output) volume, just as with guitar. It also plays well with my preferred effects pedals; another reason to choose it over the generic built in effects of modern portables. A final bonus is that the Bottle o Blues stows neatly inside the case along with 5 harmonicas and a 2 meter instrument cable.

My other amps may go to market but this little piggy will stay at home!

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Crank the amp and control the distortion with the guitar volume knob, or was it the other way around? Either way, it's a balancing act. you'll figure it out!

Good portable amp

I just got it today. It delivers good clean tones. The fuzz is legendary, used by famous artists, and you can get it too by pushing the only control to the max. Beware, it can get pretty loud for home use. The only culprit I have found is that I had to remove the speaker of mine, because the "Pignose" plate on the front of the amp was upside down. So removing the speaker, removing the speaker grill, turning it, and putting the speaker on again was the only solution. Kinda a pain for a brand new product...

U

Legendary for good reason

Everybody should have this amp, essential kit. We can use it for practice/dressing room amp, as a preamp with a larger amp or as a standalone recording amp.

If you plug straight in, the tone is really great. The unit sounds cool with the door open or closed. Once I read an article somewhere that suggested placing the pig nose inside of a washing machine and mic'ing it up, the perforated aluminium drum inside delivers a really cool effect, has to be done, just make sure the washing machine has drained and no excess water is sitting there.

This will not break the bank, but a mains adaptor is critical if you want to avoid poor performance owing to reduced battery power after a short time.

Old love

Not sure if it's just nostalgia or what but I love the Pignose. Portable, super colored sound, super fun to dial in the drive-yeah, it's just fun but also entirely practical to use in the studio-re-amping whatever. It's just a lil' box of fun. I still buy batteries from Costco in bulk. Awesome & possibility maybe an under used piece lately of my collection.

Song: “7th Street Wonderland” + “Darling You Are…” Album: Songs: Ohia – Journey On Curator: Jonathan Cargill – Secretly Canadian Co-Founder

“Originally from the Untitled 7″ released on Western Vinyl. I remember recording these two songs. It was Jason, Ben Swanson and myself. I believe we were in Jason’s apartment on 10th Street in Bloomington, Indiana. The only instruments in the place were an egg shaker, a maraca, two crude keyboards (including a Casio SK-1) and Jason’s guitar. If I recall correctly, the amp is a tiny 5 watt Pignose. The recordings reflect the intimacy of the setting. Lyrically, these songs are pretty simple by Molina’s standards, but they perfectly capture a mood. Jason’s mood at that time, to be exact. On ‘7th Street Wonderland,’ I particularly like Jasons subtle and tasteful guitar solo. There are not very many pure Molina guitar solos on recordings and they are always a treat.”

They said, 'Really?' So I went down the village to get a little Pignose and a good guitar, but they didn't have one [a good guitar]. I ended up playing some sort of weird Swiss cutaway"

“I played acoustic for the first time – a J-200 on the intro and outro of ‘All Of This And Nothing’ – but my main guitar was a Music Man Sabre II. I put a Les Paul pickup in the neck and a Bill Lawrence in the bridge, and cranked it up through a baby Vox and a Pignose. Pedal-wise, I was using an MXR flanger, a Rat, a Roland Space Echo, delays and wah. I was always much more into effected-sounding lines than straight ones, and I used a lot of textures and volume pedal swells and some harmonics.”
