Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about PRS S2 Custom 24.

Mods and upgrades

  • For those considering pickup swaps, the S2's pickups are custom-sized, which may complicate straightforward replacements.

    Source
  • Many users recommend replacing the stock pickups with Seymour Duncan Phat Cats for richer tones, especially if upgrading from a standard model.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The 2012 Core model lacks the new flat bobbin pickup setup, which some players prefer for its distinct tonal characteristics.

    Source
  • The S2 Custom 24 with USA pickups is praised for its tone, challenging the sound quality of older Core models with non-TCI pickups.

    Source
  • The S2 Custom 24-08's mini toggle switches offer intuitive control, preferred by some over a 5-way blade for ease of use during quick tone changes.

    Source

User experience

  • Some players prefer the natural back and aesthetic details of the Core model, highlighting its appeal over the S2's more straightforward design.

    Source
  • The S2 Custom 24-08 is praised for its setup out of the box, with some owners noting it's well-prepared for immediate play.

    Source
  • Some owners report better tuning stability and less fret buzz on S2 models compared to SEs, particularly around the 10th-12th frets.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Core models hold value better than S2s, with 2012 Core models selling for $2200-2800, depending on specifications and condition.

    Source
  • Used S2 models pre-2024 often lack American-made pickups but can be found for $900-1200, offering a more affordable entry point if planning to replace pickups.

    Source
  • The new S2 models with US-made electronics are considered a better investment compared to older S2s without them, despite a price increase.

    Source

Build quality

  • PRS Core models from 2010-2015 may show finish fading, especially darker stains, due to a different finishing process used at that time.

    Source
  • The S2 Custom 24 features a slight forearm carve that enhances playing comfort, preferred by some over other models for its ergonomic design.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Owners note the Core model's deeper violin carve offers a more natural feel compared to the S2's flat top, which some find less comfortable for extended play.

    Source
  • The S2's nitro finish, shared with core models, is noted for its superior feel compared to SE models' finishes.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Some players find the 3-way switch placement more comfortable, allowing quick access without obstructing play, especially for fast transitions.

    Source
  • For drop B tuning, it's suggested to use at least 13-gauge strings and adjust the nut and truss rod accordingly, as 11-gauge may not suffice.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The guitar's pickups are described as versatile for rock, blues, and jazz but not ideal for achieving specific heavy metal tones due to their inherent voicing.

Multitasking

I had this guitar for two years and i'm always finding new sounds that it can express. Is very sensitive to the player and can can change the sound completely based on who is playing it. Perfect build and finish. The only thing i really didn't like are the stock pickups, i upgraded to the PRS custom 24 stock pickups. Overall a great instrument
