Critic Reviews

SE 245 Review: I have played an SE245 from Indonesia, and they are NOT... | Paul Reed Smith | Electric Guitars | Reviews @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com

ultimate-guitar.com

The PRS SE 245 is a standout for its price, offering exceptional playability and a sleek design reminiscent of a lighter Les Paul. Its sound excels in Hard Rock and Country, though it may not satisfy metal lead players seeking boosted mids. Quality construction, especially in the Korean-made models, ensures durability, although minor upgrades to strap buttons and knobs are suggested. Overall, it's a reliable, versatile guitar that punches above its weight, earning its place in any musician's top three guitars.

PRS SE 245 Single Cut | Vintage Guitar® magazine

vintageguitar.com

The PRS SE 245 impresses with its stunning finish and robust build quality, offering a high-end feel at a mid-range price. While the neck scale and thickness may not suit everyone, the guitar delivers versatile tones from bluesy warmth to hard rock aggression. An excellent choice for entry-level to intermediate players seeking PRS craftsmanship without the hefty price tag.

Great build

A guitar made this well in this price range deserves a lot of praise. A chunkier neck suits me well because I have bigger hands, although the shorter scale can be a bit tricky for larger fingers, so it takes some getting used to. The pickups and bridge could be upgraded, but I haven’t changed anything yet. Still, a bit of modding would noticeably improve the overall quality of the guitar. The tuners are very good, and the guitar stays in tune for a long time. I don’t have much experience with lower tunings, since mine is set up in E standard. I use a drop pedal when I want to play in lower tunings.

For the money, these are hard to beat.

I've owned several 245's and honestly for the money, they are pretty phenomenal. Setup out of the box is top notch, frets are leveled, electronics are great and the pickups (even though a weak spot for me) sound really good for what they offer. Only real weaknesses are the pickups which again, aren't bad but not for everyone. And the tuners aren't the best but they function well enough. I've used this guitar out for gigs and it's the workhorse of my collection. I play primarily worship and moonlight as a lead guitarist in a pop-punk/emo cover band and it can cover all the bases in that regard. I hear these aren't "ideal for heavy music" which I feel is nonsense. It can, the only real detractor in terms of playability is the thicker neck, which I find very comfy. For being a single cut, its a little heavy but not 1970's Les Paul boat anchor-ey. There is a maple veneer which looks great, but no real maple cap. This sucker is all mahogany! Does it sound like the big G and their Les Paul? Eh... Kinda? it's got its own thing going I feel. Definitely has the LP vibe but classy in it's own right. This is a Great workhorse guitar for the gigging musician and a great entry level guitar for any beginner. It's also a fantastic mod platform if you want to swap out pickups and upgrade the hardware. Making an already good guitar into something special.

Fantastic Workhorse Guitar

I've owned this guitar for 3 years now, and it is the complete package. It plays rock, blues, metal, grunge, and most other genres you could hope for! Its a very comfortable guitar to play, and will suit the needs for any guitarist. For the price point, you cant go wrong with this one

harry_triandafyllou

Perfect, sound great for cheap.

(just for clarification, I have a PRS SE Mark Tremonti, which is almost identical to this guitar aside from few minor aspects) This guitar is relatively cheap, but sounds and looks incredible. It's light and easy to play, has gorgeous dirty and clean tones and is perfect for a musician on a budget.

The PRS SE 245 is currently John Mortimer's primary guitar of choice. The exact type of burst is eluding me, because the finish seems lighter than both the Cherry and Tobacco style sunbursts, but it is nonetheless the correct model of guitar. John can be seen using the guitar throughout the video.
