Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Roland E-20.

Features and functionality

  • The Roland E-20 features a primitive General MIDI soundset, which is not editable from the front panel, limiting its functionality for sound design.

    Source
  • The E-20 includes an internal power supply, meaning you only need a compatible cord that fits the plug, not an external power brick.

    Source
  • The E-20 is a 9-part multi-timbral device with 8 synth parts plus drums, similar to the Roland MT-32.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The E-20's engine is similar to the MT32, which is appreciated for its unique sound not replicable by modern plugins.

    Source
  • While sharing some engine similarities with the D50, the E-20 offers a limited number of sounds compared to more advanced models like the Roland E70.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • At $75, some consider the E-20 overpriced given its limitations, suggesting a value closer to $50 is more appropriate.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • As a MIDI controller, the E-20 offers only basic functionality with keys and pitchbend, lacking advanced control options.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The Roland E-20 requires a specific IEC C9 two-prong power cable, available online for around $15-$20, depending on the region and voltage specifications.

    Source
  • Confirm if the synth is intended for the US or European market to ensure voltage compatibility before purchasing a power cable.

    Source
  • Owners need to assign each part (upper, lower, bass) to a MIDI channel using the "MIDI" button for proper MIDI routing.

    Source

Build quality

  • Missing volume faders and knob caps are noted issues, but they can be replaced easily if the parts are available.

    Source

User experience

  • Users appreciate its utility as a MIDI controller or for basic piano and essential sounds, especially when acquired for free.

    Source
  • Despite setup issues, the E-20 functions well as a MIDI controller, confirming its reception and transmission capabilities.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Ensure MIDI CLOCK RX is on to sync the E-20's tempo with your DAW's tempo, which is a common oversight.
