this is the Jesus and Mary Chain fuzz.... unless you're in that band you might want to use it sparingly. I never bonded with it, I much prefer shin-ei's super fuzz circuit. There's something dissonant about the overtones from the Companion even when you only play single notes whereas the super fuzz is rather euphonic. Some people will really like this pedal because there's nothing else like it. They're getting pricey and hard to find though. Someone gave me mine during my fuzz collecting days.

From Auerbach's guitar tech:
This is a vintage companion fuzz. And the companion fuzz also goes into this EQ so that we can cut some of the lows and bring back some of the mids that are scooped out. It's a very cool octave fuzzy sound, but it kind of scoops the mids out. Even though it gets a whole lot louder, you have to bring that back into it,
Auerbach mentions Shin-Ei Companion as one of his favourite pedals in 2012 Guitar World interview. In 2012 Vintage Guitar interview, he uses Shin-Ei Companion fuzz to push the smaller amps that he uses.
Coxon's playing makes significant use of effects pedals such as distortion, delay (a significant example being "Essex Dogs") and flange (as heard in the pre-chorus of Girls & Boys). He uses a custom made Mike Hill pedalboard which over the years has included: Akai Headrush E2, Boss BF-2 Flanger, Boss CS-3 Compressor/Sustainer, Boss DD-3 Digital Delay, Boss DM-2 Analogue Delay, Boss OD-3, Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor, Boss PN-2 Tremolo/Pan, Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb, Boss TR-2 Tremolo, Boss TU-2 Tuner, Boss VB-2 Vibrato, DOD Punkifier, Electro-Harmonix HOG, Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail, Line 6 FM4 Filter Modeller, ProCo RAT, Shin-Ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz, T-Rex Mudhoney Distortion. "Obtained around 1995 for $60 in a pawn shop in LA, and soon after used infamously on Exit Music(for a film). This pedal has been a staple of his setup since then. Also used on Myxomatosis live."
