Shure 849 Review | Peter Kun Frary

fraryguitar.com

The Shure 849, a vintage cardioid condenser mic, is a mixed bag. Its sound profile, with notable EQ bumps, makes it less ideal for classical guitar recordings, yet surprisingly flattering for spoken word and various instruments. While its off-axis rejection and low self-noise are commendable, its sensitivity to plosives and high gain requirement can be challenging. Built like a tank, this mic withstands the rigors of stage use, although its lack of modern features like a high-pass filter or pad might limit its versatility. Overall, the 849 is a niche choice but not without its charms for the right application.
