Description

Wampler Tumnus Deluxe Overdrive Pedal is a premium musical tool that takes the iconic overdrive effect to new heights. This pedal retains the clarity, punch, and detailed breakup of the original Tumnus but introduces a level of tonal flexibility previously unseen in this style of drive. With active bass and mid controls as well as a treble control, this pedal offers a variety of ways to shape your tone to suit your rig.

The Tumnus Deluxe is far more than just another clone. Whether you're using it to boost a driven amp or another pedal, as a standalone overdrive, or as a constant tonal sweetener, this pedal's wide-ranging controls make it incredibly versatile.

One of the standout features of this pedal is the buffered or true bypass switch. The buffer in the Tumnus Deluxe is so good, it might enhance your tone whether the pedal is on or off. However, if you prefer the clean signal path of true bypass operation, achieving that uncolored sound is as easy as flipping a switch.

Key Features:

  • Iconic overdrive tones with deep tone control
  • Active bass and mid controls for tonal flexibility
  • Convenient top-mounted jacks
  • High-headroom output suitable for use as a boost
  • Normal/Hot switch for two levels of grit
  • Equipped with a Buffer switch for buffered or true bypass operation
  • Made in the USA by Wampler, renowned for quality construction and attention to detail

A Versatile Tone-Shaping Powerhouse

The Wampler Tumnus Deluxe immediately impressed us with its solid build quality and design. We appreciated the thoughtful placement of input/output jacks on the back, saving precious pedalboard real estate.

The controls are where this pedal truly shines. We found the 3-band EQ to be incredibly versatile, allowing us to dial in everything from subtle warmth to searing leads. The switchable buffer and "hot" mode for added gain are welcome additions.

Sound-wise, the Tumnus Deluxe delivers in spades. In our experience, it enhances your tone without drastically altering it, adding a pleasing harmonic richness and clarity. We were impressed by its ability to work well with various guitars and amps, though we noticed the treble could get a bit harsh with certain setups.

For us, the Tumnus Deluxe strikes an excellent balance between the coveted Klon sound and modern versatility. While it may not be an exact Klon, we found it to be a more than worthy alternative at a fraction of the price.

We think this pedal is perfect for guitarists seeking a transparent overdrive with extensive tone-shaping capabilities.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Wampler Tumnus Deluxe.

Features and functionality

  • The Tumnus Deluxe's 3-band EQ can alter the character significantly, with owners noting that cranking the treble and cutting bass are crucial for clarity.

    Source
  • When using hot switch and max gain settings, the pedal retains harmonics and pick dynamics, offering a versatile range from edge of breakup to high gain tones.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • For humbuckers, keeping gain low and using the pedal as a clean boost is advised to avoid unwanted mid-hump and preserve clarity.

    Source
  • Some players found the Tumnus Deluxe excels in lead tones when maxing gain and engaging the high switch, producing unexpected chuggy sounds despite its Klon-like roots.

    Source
  • The pedal is often used as a "lead pedal" in conjunction with a boost, with success found in setups like Comp > Tumnus > OCD.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users find the Tumnus Deluxe less tight in bass response compared to the Tumnus Mini, despite the Deluxe's added versatility.

    Source
  • The Tumnus Deluxe was found to nearly rival the MXR 5150 in lead tone quality at bedroom volumes, particularly when tested on a DSL40CR amp.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Pairing the Tumnus Deluxe with an external EQ, like the Archer Rockaway, can improve flexibility and tone shaping capabilities.

    Source

User experience

  • The pedal can feel bass-heavy, prompting some users to cut bass more than expected to achieve desired clarity, especially when paired with certain amps like the Peavey Classic 20.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's important to be cautious with voltage; exceeding limits can fry the input buffer, as experienced by one user who then switched to a germanium version temporarily.

Wampler Tumnus Deluxe

guitarinteractivemagazine.com

Wampler's Tumnus Deluxe impresses with its versatile tonal capabilities and robust build quality. While it maintains the beloved sound of its predecessor, it expands on the original with additional EQ controls and a hot/normal switch, enhancing its adaptability for various styles. The pedal's switchable buffered or true bypass adds further flexibility. Though some may miss the compact size of the original, the Deluxe version offers more room for tone sculpting. Overall, a fantastic update for those seeking a rich, customizable overdrive without breaking the bank.

Very powerful versatile klone

This version of the klone family is more tonally versatile than most. Also has lots of output, as a boost would work great, I use it as a drive pedal, Its a hard clipper driven hard but I use it for light to medium gain. It’s got a mid push, but not as extreme as a TS. Great tone controls and great sound!

This would be the one to keep...

If I had to give up on all my pedals - and I have more than 50 today - and keep only one, I would keep this guy. It sounds amazing, I cannot get a bad sound out of it and it sounds amazing on my strats (love strats) when I lower the tone knob to 10/20%.
