this is an incredibly powerful synthesizer with a wave memory based engine for attack sounds coupled with a DX7mk2 engine with a multimode digital filter that's not bad for the era. It sits squarely between the DX7 and roland D50 in character.... it is a huge pain to program your own patches. This synthesizer is cumbersome physically and that carries over to the interface LOL. It really sounds cool but I dock it 2 stars for the interface which would be great if it weren't a multilayer synth engine, big step up from the dx7.... but since it has all these extra parameters? meh. A software programmer or an ipad app is a must. For live performance its pretty much a preset box. You're going to want to spend days on end making patches if you want to use this thing with a band. Its also highly multitimbral to the point of being a proto-workstation, but I'm just not a workstation guy. I don't like all in one solutions. Well, baked potato soup is okay, but typically I would rather have soup AND a baked potato.... savy? I vastly prefer the SY35 at the moment. Similar sound, vector joystick, smaller footprint.... and not a single feature I don't try to use :-) I'm not sure the 99 will stick around. These type of boards come in and out of my life. I get passionate about acquiring them and then they get stale fast. The performance angle is just not thought through and its not like Yamaha can't focus on that. This is a stop on the road to the Motif. If you like that type of thing then try an SY99, they're pretty affordable for all that they can do.

Vangelis has been identified using the Yamaha SY99 synthesizer, as noted by Elsewhere in their "Spotted Instruments" section.
The concert is short comprising just three pieces, two of which are performed by Sakamoto alone on a Yamaha MIDI Grand piano. The piano is linked via MIDI to a Korg T2 and Yamaha SY99. Additionally there is a DAT backing tape carrying parts of the music and vocal harmonies. The venue is badly suited to live music and the sound crew have problems with the balance and feedback during the sound check - to the concern of Sakamoto's press people. Their worries prove unfounded however, as the gallery fills to capacity and the additional bodies make it more workable. Better still, the music scores highly with the wide range of people in attendance - an indication of the largely unacknowledged popularity of the artist.

In this youtube video at 3:11, Scooter can be seen having the Yamaha SY99 on stage (center keyboard). It can be identified by the 3 bends + floppy drive on the left, the shape of the side panels, the display position, the rotary nob and the space between the side panels and the buttons. The Yamaha SY77 looks very similar, but the highest key for the SY77 is a C, while the highest key for the Yamaha SY99 is a G.

At the 1:13 mark in Europe's "I'll Cry For You" music video, Gunnar Mathias Michaeli can be seen using a Yamaha SY99.
"Adams does his composing at his home studio in Berkeley, which consists of several Yamaha keyboards, including an SY77, SY99 and Electone, Korg Wavestation, Emu Proteus 1 module and Emax II, Kurzweil K2000, Lexicon LXP15 reverb, Macintosh computer with software such as Performer and Blank Software's Alchemy, and a small 16-channel desk ("I can't remember the name. I only use this studio for writing, and I write as much with the sequencer as with pen, paper and piano")."
