Universal Audio traces its roots to 1958, when recording pioneer Bill Putnam Sr. founded the company alongside United Recording Corporation in Hollywood, California. The original entity produced some of the most revered hardware in recording history, including the 610 tube preamplifier and the LA-2A optical leveling amplifier — gear that became standard equipment in professional studios worldwide. The brand was later absorbed into UREI (United Recording Electronics Industries) and eventually phased out by the mid-1970s.

In 1999, Bill Putnam Sr.'s sons Jim and Bill Jr. revived Universal Audio, merging it with Kind of Loud Technologies, a Stanford-connected software firm. Operating from Scotts Valley, California, the revived company began producing faithful hardware reissues of the classic 1176LN compressor and LA-2A, while simultaneously developing the UAD-2 DSP platform — a system that runs high-fidelity software emulations of vintage analog gear inside a dedicated hardware accelerator. The 2012 launch of the Apollo audio interface line brought UAD processing directly into a professional-grade interface with onboard real-time DSP, becoming a centerpiece of modern project and professional studios alike.

Universal Audio expanded into the guitar effects market with its UAFX pedal line, bringing the same analog modeling approach to stage-ready stompboxes. Products like the Dream '65 Reverb Amplifier, Ruby '63 Top Boost Amplifier, Woodrow '55 Instrument Amplifier, Orion Tape Echo, and 1176 Studio Compressor have earned recognition from players including The Edge and John Mayer. The company also developed LUNA, a digital audio workstation designed around deep integration with the Apollo hardware ecosystem. Universal Audio received a Technical Grammy Award in 2009 in recognition of its contributions to recording technology.

Universal Audio has 356 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Audio Interfaces, Compressor Plugins, and Effects Processors. Their gear is featured by 884 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Rock, and Pop. Notable users include Andrew Huang, Armin Van Buuren, and Diplo. Universal Audio's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
