Critic Reviews

Akai APC Key 25 review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Akai APC Key 25 offers a compelling mix of portability and functionality for the mobile musician. Despite its compact size, it packs a punch with a 5x8 grid of clip-launching buttons and scene launch buttons, making it a versatile tool for on-the-go music production. While the keyboard action feels somewhat squishy and lacks pitch and mod wheels, its compact design and the inclusion of essential controls like play, record, and Stop All Clips buttons make it a solid choice for lightweight gigs. It's especially appealing to Ableton Live users, solidifying its status as a portable powerhouse.

Low price, low quality, lots of control surfaces

I picked up mine for around 60 USD a couple of years ago. It's a decent little MIDI controller with ample control surfaces. I get the most usage out of the potentiometer knobs. No velocity sensitivity and the keys feel cheap to depress. The buttons are also cheap feeling, like the Novation Launchpad 1st gen. Overall, it is versatile—I'll give it that—but it leaves much to be desired.

Works Well But Cheaply Made

Have had this keyboard for a few years now. Really great for on the go but one of the knobs broke after a few months of me having it. If you want it to last, I recommend a carrying case.

Portable and Steady

I've had this controller for about 2 years now and I really believe it's worth checking out. The hub broke once (my fault) but got it fixed with no further problems. It's pretty solid considering it's plastic, I've dropped it a lot of times. Syncs seamlessly with Ableton. The design is pretty slick and smart. Something that would make this controller even better would be an added velocity sensitivity feature.

Cool one

You can play any instrument with MIDI keyboard, sample, records and play sounds on pads. You can use pads as MIDI controller to play like a launchpad. But it's not so easy to start using it, and you can't use it as a DJ console.

Akai's evolution in Ableton controller design

The APC Legacy

In 2009, Akai Professional collaborated with the creators of Ableton Live, a powerful music performance and production software environment, and introduced the original Ableton Performance Controller—APC40. The instrument raised the standards of controller design, revolutionized hardware and software integration, and proved to be an essential performance tool for Ableton Live users everywhere. Now, after incorporating five years of user feedback into their development, Akai Professional builds upon this original partnership by introducing three new APCs—APC40 mkII, APC Key 25, and APC mini.

Seamlessy integration with Ableton with a keyboard to play some melodies

It's perfect for my needs. I can manipulate clips, and play melodies, manipulate filters, and other automations, and best of all, a small package. It saves space and weight. Very good idea from AKAI. I dreamed with this baby, and AKAI becames true, for my luck.

Not a Bad Controller

Great for the price and very versatile. Keys feel a little cheap but you can work around it.

gary_riverol

Really good piece of equipment!

Does what i need it to do but does not function properly with any other software's other then Ableton, which i should of looked at before buying.

jeffleuterio

Not bad

It's not so well built, but it still can make the magic.

So far it's great.

I was just able to get it. So far it has worked really well, I am still learning things which, all I can say is it will be an awesome experience.
