In an Instagram post, music producer Easy Mo Bee shares a photo showing two Akai S950 MIDI Digital Samplers, captioning it with, "Ok.. enough is enough. Time for some repair service on my babies. Just because... I want every single knob, lamp, flywheel, disk drive, etc in premium working order. I've done some incredible things with these tools and they deserve to be in tip top shape. There will be A LOT of beat posts in the future when they come out of the shop. Stay tuned... #MoBeeMayne ⚒🛠."

In this picture that Dj Evil Dee posted to his Instagram, he shows off some off his classic gear and writes, "#tbt #throwbackthursday WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THE SP1200, SP12 TURBO & THE AKAI 950 ???"

I've got something like the S-950, which is a very famous sampler used by a lot of Hip Hop people like Pete Rock, DJ Premier. Also used by people like Shy FX in the early Jungle scene. It's a 12-bit sampler, it's got amazing A/D converters and has a very round sound. It's also known for its filter which is really deep. It can take a little longer to setup and can be a bit of a faff but for the sound alone it's worth it.

This used to be the duo right here, the SP-1200 and the 950, that's how I started making beats. I actually got this SP-1200 from one of my heroes of electronic music, his name is Todd Terry, he was one of the first dudes... or probably the- he is the first dude to bring in samples into the house world. Like, his beats was always dirty and grimy and... he gave me this machine back in like '95. And this is how I did most of the beats that came out, like, in the Ruckus era, the Beyond Real era, the J-Live, the Das-EFX joints, y'know, all those joints. Did it on this and then by '98, I graduated to the [Akai MPC] 3000. And I really haven't stopped using the 3000.

Also, back then, MIDI was in a very primitive state. MIDI is the language that computers, synthesizers, and samplers use to speak to each other. It was extremely primitive at that point. Q-Tip was sequencing on an SP-1200, and Ali had an Alesis eight-track MIDI sequencer and an Akai S950. Sampling technology was very primitive. The S950 had maybe a second and a half worth of memory. Putting together those complex, elaborate constructions was so difficult. It took a lot of time. We had to do things bit by bit because of the undeveloped memory for samplers at that point. We had to be creative in the way we approached things. People say we used twenty-four tracks, but we really had twenty-two tracks to deal with because you needed to print a synchronization code on one track and use another track as your guard band. Because samplers would only hold less than a second worth of sound at one time, we ended up putting little bits of things across different tracks and combining them later.

According to this article on the making of Goldie's Timeless album from the June 1998 issue of Sound on Sound magazine, Playford says, "...there have always been things I like to constantly upgrade. It used to be my samplers. I went from the S950 to the S1000, then up to the S1100, and finally to a S3200. I can't see myself upgrading again soon."
