Description

Catalinbread Echorec - A Revival of a Classic in a Compact Package

The Catalinbread Echorec is a compact pedal, designed to emulate the iconic Binson Echorec. This legendary tube echo was a mainstay in the arsenal of many renowned musicians, with Pink Floyd being one of the most well-known users. The Echorec pedal, while being much smaller and more robust than its predecessor, manages to pack in all the classic features of the original, and includes an extended delay time of 40 ms - 1000 ms.

The Echorec pedal is not just a replica, but an upgrade of the vintage Binson Echorec. It offers 12 different combinations of playback "head" positions, a feature not available in the original. This means that you are not just limited to the sounds of the past, but can also experiment with a wide range of new echo patterns and delay times.

Another notable addition is the discrete two-transistor preamp driver circuit. This feature provides a boost to your guitar tone, adding a lively intensity without the use of buffers. Moreover, the Echorec pedal also includes a variable mix control that can be adjusted from 100% dry to 100% wet, providing you with an even greater range of tonal options.

Key Features:

Catalinbread Echorec - Authentic Sound, lacks modern features

Let’s dive right in: the Catalinbread Echorec has been a much-anticipated addition to our pedalboard. As musicians who thrive on vintage soundscapes, we had high hopes for this pedal, especially given its lineage and promise to mimic the legendary Binson Echorec.

From the moment we unboxed the Echorec, it was clear that the build quality is both rugged and reliable. When it comes to the controls and features, the Echorec offers a wide variety of modes and controls that are great for crafting unique sounds. The multi-head selector and tone control for repeats are standout features. However, the lack of detents in the multi-head selector can make it tricky to use precisely. It’s also unfortunate that there are no presets or a tap tempo function—features we find essential in a modern delay pedal.

Sound quality is where the Echorec truly shines. The echoes are organic, wet, and dynamic, capturing the essence of the original Binson Echorec. It excels at replicating those iconic Pink Floyd tones and offers a versatile range of delays. Yet, we did encounter some issues with background noise, particularly in buffered bypass mode, and on higher settings, we experienced the dreaded self-oscillating high-pitch squeal.

In conclusion, the Catalinbread Echorec is a pedal for the purists—those who value authentic, vintage tones over modern conveniences. It's perfect for musicians who want to explore unique delay sounds and are not deterred by occasional noise issues or the lack of presets. On the flip side, if you prioritize modern features and pristine signal paths, you might find it lacking.

Catalinbread Echorec Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

Catalinbread's Echorec pedal is a standout tribute to the iconic Binson Echorec, offering vintage authenticity with modern functionality. With its atmospheric and rhythmic delay capabilities, it provides a lush, expansive sound that appeals to fans of ambient and psychedelic music. The Echorec excels in creating intricate, unique soundscapes, thanks to its intuitive 12-position program select knob. However, the lack of detents can make navigating settings tricky in low-light situations. While its $230 price tag may seem steep for basic delay users, those seeking creative and dynamic sound experiences will find it a worthwhile investment.

positive

Catalinbread Echorec

soundonsound.com

Catalinbread's Echorec pedal successfully captures the essence of the vintage Binson Echorec in a compact form. Its emulation of the original's organic preamp and magnetic-drum system delivers rich, dynamic echoes ideal for recreating '60s-era sounds. The pedal's versatility is enhanced by a 12-way head selector and internal trimmers for modulation, though some may find the lack of detents on the switch and small panel legends slightly cumbersome. The absence of battery power could be a drawback, but the Echorec's overall performance and tonal quality make it a standout choice for musicians seeking authentic vintage echo tones.

Cool pedal, but too much setting for a live using

Well this is a cool studio pedal, and it sound great, but as I say in the title there's too much setting and possibilities for me... Ok I'm a one knob pedal lover and the more I play, the more I reduce my pedalboard live and rehearsals anyway .. On the other hand, this pedal sounds really good and on a recording and experimentation configuration, it's a good instrument

Sounds real close to a real Binson unit.

This pedal sounds damn close to a real Binson Echorec. With this pedal I am able to get that cool Hank Marvin style guitar tones.

Beautiful Delay

Wonderful modulated multi-tap delay. Wish it had tap tempo but otherwise stunning.

gabriel_rojas

The closest effect for Binson Echorec delay

This tape delay pedal is designed to get as closer you can to the famous Binson Echorec delay used by David Gilmour, Jimmy Page and many other guitar heroes.

jimmarchi1

and do you think it succeeds or fails at this?

gabriel_rojas

Well, in my opinión I think it does a good job nailing the Binson Echorec sounds. With all the mode and tone knobs, you can play and find what set works for you.

That goes into my first delay, a Catalinbread Echorec, which is nice for dreamy and misty swelling delays. It has a nice chorus-y glaze, followed by the Earthquaker Avalanche Run, and these days I tend to keep both on…
