Minilogue's studio is surrounded by serene nature outside of Malmö, Sweden. It's here that Sebastian Mullaert and Markus Henriksson compose their lush, evolving techno suites with a variety of hardware and software - with Live at the center of each musician's setup. In the video below, Sebastian gives us an overview of Minilogue's technology.

"I'm more a hardware guy. I've got two Nords that I use a lot — the Lead Version 2 and the small one, the Nord Modular, with all the editing stuff inside the computer. I like the texture of the Nord Lead. I'm not too much into the Modular because I'm not a software person really. I like tweaking knobs and having a straight effect. I really enjoy being able to touch the equipment and see what I'm doing, I relate much more to that. What I like about the Nord Lead is it's got tons of buttons and you don't have to go into pages and pages to actually have something happening."

In terms of keyboards, Vrenna notes, “I just like big, shiny keyboards with lots of lights. My sampler is still an E-mu: the E4 Ultra. I still use it every day of my life. They discontinued them because they've gone software, as well with the new E-mu X Series, so I've been picking up used E-mu's out of the Recycler and eBay and building a couple more hardware samplers just so I have them.” His arsenal also includes a Waldorf Microwave XT, Kurzweil K2000/R, Roland V Synths, an old Virus updated “as far as it will go,” a Nord Lead 2, Alesis Andromeda A6 and “a good old trusty JP8000.”

The original Nord Lead was great, but we waited for the polyphonic one, because part of its job will be to replace the ailing Emax on stage. The meticulous attention required for controlling the filter and ensuring expressiveness in the bass-synth sounds from the Nord Lead 2 was highlighted in a source, where it was noted: “You have to be very careful with the controller and the way the filter is used. With bass-synth sounds [from the Nord Lead 2], if you don't use the legato, if you don't add expressiveness, it is very static-sounding. This is why some electronic music is very cold.
