Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about E-Mu Proteus 1 XR.

Setup and maintenance

  • It's crucial to ensure the internal battery is functional, as a dead battery can cause loss of preset patches and display them as "---DEFAULT---".

    Source
  • Ribbon cable connections may break at PCB; resoldering can restore missing voltage and audio output.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Cheap MIDI-to-USB cables, like those from Eeekit, may misinterpret SysEx data, leading to failed data transfers and issues like notes sticking.

    Source
  • Adjusting the transfer speed in SysEx Librarian may help when transferring SysEx files, as older gear like the Proteus/1 XR has a transfer speed limit.

    Source
  • Factory SysEx file reload is necessary if instruments sound mixed up after repairs.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners have experienced missing presets even after successful SysEx transfer attempts, indicating potential hardware or cable issues rather than software errors.

    Source

Build quality

  • Poor soldering on main controller IC can cause audio issues; reflowing solder with proper technique can restore sound quality.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Sound ROMs may randomly fail tests due to poor connections; proper reflowing can resolve this.

Usefull rompler

Some good sounds in this module from the 80s. The strings sounds and choirs are great. Sounds similar to sounds used by New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle. This module is/was used by Pet Shop Boys.

The module is multitimbral and has 3 pairs of outputs. Very powerfull for its time.

jimmarchi1

ever tried a Morpheus?

kirabir

No, I have not. I have never heard anything bad about E-mu products. I love their Emulator and Emax stuff :-)

jimmarchi1

love the Emax I and II! I recently bought a used Morpheus and its blowing me away for pads and tectures,,, you can do some pretty interesting long-decay, morphing percussion sounds in it too.... its a bear to program though, I can lose a whole weekend working on 1 patch that will be used in about 8 bars of music LOL

kirabir

He he, I find its always a good thing if a musical machine can keep me sucked in for long periods of time. I understand its not the fastest to edit, but it keeps you engaged :-)
