Critic Reviews

Earthworks SR314

soundonsound.com

The Earthworks SR314 is a stunningly crafted microphone that delivers exceptional clarity and off-axis rejection, making it a top choice for both stage and studio use. Its elegant design and robust build are noteworthy, attracting attention from performers. While it's not the most budget-friendly option, its performance justifies the investment. However, singers should be cautious of strong plosives when close to the mic, and the lack of an adapter for 3/8-inch stands might frustrate some users. Overall, the SR314 stands out for its sonic quality and aesthetic appeal, making it a worthy contender among high-end vocal mics.

Recording Magazine Review: Earthworks SR314 Condenser Microphone

recordingmag.com

The Earthworks SR314 delivers exceptional clarity and off-axis rejection, making it a standout for both live performance and studio recording. Its sturdy stainless steel construction and balanced feel are appealing, while its ability to handle high SPL without distortion is commendable. However, the pop screen occasionally lets plosives slip through, which could be a concern for some vocalists. Overall, this mic brings studio-quality sound to the stage, though users may need to adjust their technique to avoid minor issues with plosives.

Review: Earthworks SR314 Handheld Vocal Microphone - Mixonline

mixonline.com

The Earthworks SR314 handheld vocal microphone shines with its smooth off-axis response and robust build quality, making it suitable for both stage and studio use. Its unique design and flattering low-mid coloration provide a rich vocal presence. However, it does have its drawbacks; sensitivity to plosives and a heavier weight necessitate a sturdy mic stand. Additionally, in reflective environments, the cardioid pattern may pick up unwanted sound, which could be problematic for some applications. While the SR314 is pricier than traditional dynamic microphones, its premium audio quality justifies the investment for serious vocalists.

Used for vocals on "Sparkle Mountain", as specified in the project breakdown at 13:23.

I recorded the vocals with this mic. This is the Earthworks SR314, which is built for live use, but I do like it in the studio sometimes when I wanna go handheld. First of all, it has really good off-axis rejection, it's very directional, but also it reduces a lot of the noise from hands, being handheld. And I just like that sometimes when I'm recording a vocal where I want a lot of energy and I want to be playful and I don't want to be rooted in one spot singing to a mic on a stand, but I can, y'know, just move around, have fun, play and, so that's why I chose this mic to record the vocals for "Sparkle Mountain". I think it sounds great.
