Critic Reviews

Epiphone DR-100 review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The Epiphone DR-100 Acoustic Guitar in Ebony is a budget-friendly dreadnought that delivers impressive sound and playability. With a laminated spruce top and mahogany back and sides, it offers a balanced, dynamic sound typical of a classic dreadnought, albeit with less resonance than solid wood models. Its clear tone, great playability, and excellent value make it a standout choice for beginners. However, heavy strummers might find it reaches its volume limit faster than pricier models. The build quality is solid, though the tuners are a weak point, yet they hold tuning reasonably well after a break-in period.

Epiphone DR-100 Review and Simple Rundown - Guitar Chalk

guitarchalk.com

The Epiphone DR-100 is a budget-friendly acoustic guitar best suited for beginners and casual practice. Priced at $150, it offers decent sound quality, particularly in the high registers, and a solid build for its price range. However, it lacks solid wood and built-in electronics, which limits its tonal richness and versatility. While perfect for basic strumming and entry-level learning, it's not ideal for serious recording or performances. Overall, it's a reasonable starter guitar but don't expect it to compete with higher-end models.

A wonderful guitar for songwriting/recording plagued by a personal issue.

This guitar sounds wonderful. The guitar doesn't feel or sound cheap at all, and it is quite nice to play on. It has a weird sort of mellowness and softness to it, and can add some nice attack with ease. The guitar sustains surprisingly well, and all in all, is just a great guitar. I personally keep it by my bed instead of with the rest of my guitars/basses so I can just pick it up and write songs on it with ease.

I will say, the neck is a bit too chunky or thick for me, if that makes sense, and it can cause some slight hand pain when playing barre chords for long periods of time. You could associate this to my relative inexperience (although I've been playing guitar for two years), but I think it's just the fact that acoustic guitars are a bit too uncomfortable for me neck-wise. I am much more comfortable on electric guitar. It might not be the same for you, however.

The guitar has a nice sort of mellowness and softness to the sound, it sort of reminds me of the sound of the acoustic guitar on Nirvana's "Polly." It sounds especially nice when playing barre chords on the bottom three strings (E, A, D) and has a nice balance of frequencies in the sound. All in all, a wonderful guitar.
