Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about FOCAL Alpha 80 Studio Monitor (Single).

Features and functionality

  • The Alpha 80 has slightly recessed highs, reducing harshness while providing excellent bass extension down to about 36Hz.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • These monitors excel in EDM and sub-centric genres due to their massive sub extension and non-fatiguing sound.

    Source
  • It’s noted that using a single monitor for stereo mixes is impractical and could hinder achieving accurate sound imaging, better suited for headphones.

    Source
  • Personal critical listening and mixing skills are emphasized as more influential on achieving desired sound mixes than the quality of the gear alone.

    Source
  • Focal Alpha 80s are perceived as leagues ahead of Yamaha HS8s in terms of low-end performance, especially when paired with good room treatment.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report no ear fatigue even after long mixing sessions, making them suitable for intensive use in aggressive music genres like drum and bass.

    Source
  • Some users consider the JBL 308P MkII as good entry-level monitors, highlighting their capability to produce excellent mixes despite being more affordable.

    Source
  • Owners report that Focal Alpha 80s perform well even in acoustically imperfect rooms, with one user mixing a Grammy-nominated album on them.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Focal Alpha 80 is described as having a slight scoop in the mid-bass range (70-150Hz), distinguishing it from monitors with a flatter response in that area.

    Source
  • The JBL 308P MkII is regarded as a more affordable alternative to the Focal Alpha 80 for those unable to purchase a pair of high-end monitors immediately.

    Source
  • Focal Alpha 80s have a wider sweet spot due to the inverted dome tweeter and easier wall placement with the front bass reflex port compared to Yamaha HS8s.

    Source
  • Adam T8Vs, with ribbon tweeters, are suggested as an alternative to HS8s for a similar price, offering a different sound profile.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Owners suggest that breaking in the monitors may help balance thumpy or muddy bass sounds over time.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • ZenPro offers modified Yamaha HS8s with Burr Brown op-amps and Panasonic low ESR capacitors, improving detail and clarity over stock models.

The studio No Mana is working with Zashanell in has the Focal Alpha 80s as the secondary monitors. The size of the Focals in comparison to the Yamaha NS-10M indicates it has to be the Alpha 80s instead of the Alpha 65s or 50s.

I bought these studio monitors after being frustrated with my KRK Rokit 8s. They were super loud and my mixes really sucked. Part of it was that I was really terrible at mixing at the time, but I also couldn’t hear the clarity in what I was mixing. Once I upgraded to the Focals it was like everything opened up. I actually started listening better when I was mixing. I could now hear the high frequencies popping out in the guitars and cymbals that really needed to be tamed.
