Top-Tier Monitors for Pro Studios

When it comes to studio monitors, reliability and sound quality are paramount, and the Focal Shape Twin delivers on both fronts.

The first thing we noticed was the exceptional build quality. Focal has never failed us in this regard, and the Shape Twin is no exception. These monitors look fantastic with a handsome, modern design and real attention to detail. They are solidly planted on the desktop, although the screw-in feet can be a bit of a hassle to adjust and, if not properly set, may cause stability issues. However, once they are in place, the adjustable rubber feet offer great stability and customization.

The Shape Twin features an auto power function, which we found quite convenient. The controls include low and high-frequency knobs, yet these are not indented, making it difficult to set them precisely the same on each monitor. This is a bit of a letdown for those who require exact adjustments.

When it comes to sound, these monitors truly shine. The passive radiator produces a well-controlled, solid low end, while the highs are clear, the mids robust, and the lows well-defined. The stereo imaging is fantastic, revealing all transients and details without causing ear fatigue. However, we did notice that these are not flat monitors. They have a specific character with forward low-mids and slightly under-pronounced high-mids to top end.

In conclusion, the Focal Shape Twin is a high-quality, reliable choice for professional musicians and audio engineers looking to improve their mix quality. However, those who prefer a flatter response might want to look elsewhere.

Critic Reviews

Focal Shape Twin

soundonsound.com

Focal's Shape Twin monitors deliver exceptional mid-range clarity and a tonally neutral sound, making them a great choice for serious mixing. Their innovative design features, including auxiliary bass radiators, enhance low-frequency response without the usual port-related issues. However, they do exhibit slightly soft bass transients compared to competitors, which may be a drawback for some users. Overall, they strike an impressive balance between unique aesthetics and audio performance, making them highly recommended for those seeking quality in their monitoring setup.

Focal: Shape Twin Active Monitors | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production.

tapeop.com

Focal's Shape Twin monitors deliver exceptional clarity and minimal room interaction, making them a standout choice for mixing. Their compact size, stunning design, and impressive low-end translation allow for detailed sound reproduction without overwhelming room resonance. Users can easily make nuanced decisions even from a distance, and mixes translate seamlessly across various playback systems. However, the peculiar standby mode might take some getting used to. Despite this minor quibble, these monitors effectively replace pricier options, proving their worth in both performance and build quality. Overall, the Shape Twins are a fantastic investment for any serious music producer.

Recording Magazine Reviews: Focal Shape Twin

recordingmag.com

Focal's Shape Twin monitors deliver a rich, even midrange that impressively balances critical listening and casual enjoyment. Their unique design, featuring dual drivers and innovative materials, promotes clarity and tight bass response. However, potential buyers should note that these speakers diverge from standard studio monitors, requiring an adjustment period to appreciate their distinctive sound profile. Overall, the Shape Twin excels in versatility but may not suit everyone’s mixing preferences right out of the box.

Review: Focal Shape Twin

mixonline.com

Focal's Shape Twin studio monitors deliver impressive detail and imaging, making them a stellar choice for small studio setups. Their innovative 2.5-way design ensures a wide frequency response while maintaining a compact form factor. However, the non-detented knobs for frequency adjustments can be frustrating for precise tuning, and the auto standby feature might cut off the audio for a moment as they power up. While they excel in clarity and bass response, they don't quite match the low-end output of some competitors. Still, for those seeking a professional sound in a limited space, the Shape Twin stands out as a strong contender.
