Critic Reviews

Genelec 8320A & 8330A APM

soundonsound.com

Genelec's 8330A SAM™ Studio Monitor delivers impressive sonic clarity and a compact design, ideal for various settings. The standout feature is the GLM 2.0 software, which simplifies room calibration, ensuring optimal sound in challenging acoustic environments. While the 8330A's five-inch woofer surpasses the smaller 8320A in bass response, both monitors shine in delivering detailed audio. However, the lack of digital input on the 8320A may deter some users. Overall, if you're seeking a reliable monitoring solution with advanced calibration features, the Genelec 8330A is a solid choice, though it comes with a higher price tag.

Genelec 832OA & 833OA Review

musictech.com

While the Genelec 8330A SAM™ Studio Monitor showcases impressive sound clarity and a sophisticated calibration system, it also reveals significant limitations. The SAM calibration can elevate performance, particularly in low-end response, but results may vary, with some users finding it lacking punch in certain setups. The design is sleek, and the setup process is user-friendly, but the need for a subwoofer for full frequency coverage may deter some. Ultimately, while it excels in soundstage and realism, potential buyers should weigh its calibration quirks and the necessity for additional gear against its premium price.

Best monitor you will ever get for the price.

First, you're not gonna find a better speaker on the market for this kind of money. You just won't.

I've listened to just about every genre on just about every speaker as well and nothing compares to Genelec. The fact that they offer a model for under 1k that performs like a 3-4k set of monitors is mind blowing. Even if you don't have the GLM kit these are still going to perform way above their price point and it's definitely money well spent.

They literally do not lie. If you have a good mix these are going to let you know and same goes for a bad mix. Every little detail you could and couldn't think of is going to be revealed and every change you make will be equally as audible. You can easily hear a .5db lift or cut with these and the stereo image is so precise you could close your eyes, reach out, and point to each individual element.

If you're work in live sound, theater, or mixing and mastering I would suggest adding a subwoofer just so you don't miss that information below 50-40hz but for the average user or someone who can't afford a sub these are the zenith of this price range.

Awesome

Really amazing sound. With the GLM Software you can put filters to make the sound more linear. They improved my mixing and mastering!

We used these little guys extensively to get sounds and even mix my last band's LP. A good portion of the album's overdubs were done in a University's Studio B which had really sketchy control room treatment and dimensions. The Genelecs and their software saved the day. Where my beloved NS10s woulda been a mess in that control room, the Genelecs tamed themselves. We even used the Genelecs as an extra reference during mix down.

Hardwell's third music studio in his home in Curaçao (a Dutch Caribbean island) is outfitted with Genelec speakers. His studio designer Jan Morel has spoken about what he uses, including Genelec 8330A studio monitors, "positioned about 4 feet away to provide the nearfield system:"

The aesthetic requirements for the new studio demanded a different design from Hardwell’s allwhite main studio in the Netherlands, with the style, colours and architecture mirroring the house in Curacao itself. However, there was only ever one choice for the monitoring solution. “He is used to Genelec, his main studio is equipped with 1034Bs, a 7073A and 8341As,” says Morel. “For him there is no other option to go for, or work with.”

While the monitoring brand has remained the same, Morel opted for a slightly different Genelec solution in response to the different acoustic environment of the new Curacao space. A pair of 1237A studio monitors have been installed as the main monitoring solution – about 6 feet from the listening position – with two 8330A monitors positioned about 4 feet away to provide the nearfield system. Finally, a 7071A dual 12-inch subwoofer has been placed under the desk but off centre, close to the wall to manage low frequencies. As part of Genelec’s Smart Active Monitoring family, the 1237A and 8330A monitors were configured and calibrated using Genelec’s own GLM software.

In this press release on Tim Henson by Genelec you can see Tim and bandmate using the 8330As.

We just got a pair of 8330s, in the RAW finish, that we have out on tour with us. And it’s great because every day we are in a different area, a different room for us to write in and all we do is set up the 8330s, and then dial in the GLM, and the room gets ‘treated’ the way it needs to be, and we have an accurate, consistent monitoring area for playback. It’s just a life-saving thing. The idea is that whenever inspiration hits, we should be able to just get it out.
