Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s (2019 - 2022).

Build quality

  • The Costa Rican cases, used from 2022, feature square latches and are heavier due to their sturdier construction compared to previous Canadian TKL cases.

    Source
  • Some owners note minor tooling marks on fretboard bindings, which are considered acceptable but visible upon close inspection.

    Source
  • Some instruments from the 2022-2023 batch reportedly have less dramatic flame tops, described as bordering on plain, despite being labeled as "AA figured."

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's been suggested to inspect the truss rod nut for authenticity checks, as scammers often overlook such details.

    Source
  • One user found a lacquer-covered truss rod nut, making adjustments impossible without removing the lacquer.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The visible wood grain through the finish on the back is noted as a sign of authenticity for the 2022 Les Paul Standard 50s Tobacco Burst.

    Source
  • The thick neck profile of the 50s Standard is polarizing, with players favoring the 60s version if they prefer a slimmer neck.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The 2022 model's tuners are consistent with those from the late 70s and early 80s, offering a classic aesthetic appeal without modern alterations.

    Source
  • Gibson's current QC is now considered comparable to Fender's, meaning more reliable but still with occasional issues.

    Source
  • Some players draw parallels between the new standards and high-end Custom Shop models, citing comparable playability and build quality.

    Source

User experience

  • A 2023 Standard 50s owner noted the guitar's weight at 8.25 lbs, significantly lighter than their 2012 model at 9.36 lbs, enhancing playability.

    Source

    Source

Other

  • Sweetwater's policy of featuring professional photos of each guitar helps buyers select their preferred top and wood grain.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Users frequently replace weak stock pickups with higher output options like Gibson's 496R/500T for a more robust sound.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • There is a preference for the non-weight-relieved bodies for a more traditional Les Paul experience, enhancing resonance and sustain, as noted by one owner.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The resale value of pre-2019 models may decline due to increased demand for 2019+ models that adhere more closely to original Les Paul specs.

musicradar.com

A refreshing return to classic specs, the Gibson Les Paul Standard '50s brings back the vintage vibe with its big neck and solid build. While it boasts classic voicing and improved setup compared to previous models, minor issues like sharp edges and a need for better wiring might irk some players. Nevertheless, for those craving a more authentic Les Paul experience, this model stands out as a compelling choice, albeit with room for some tweaks.

Review: Gibson 2019 Les Paul Standard ’50s & Les Paul Tribute

guitar.com

The Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s captures the essence of classic design with its solid build and vintage aesthetics, making it a standout for players who cherish authenticity. While it boasts impressive tonal depth and a comfortable neck profile, some may find the heavier weight less favorable, and the pickups could use a bit more refinement. Nevertheless, its playability and craftsmanship resonate well with both seasoned musicians and those new to the Les Paul legacy. A solid choice, albeit with room for improvement.

The Gibson Resurrection

After years when quality was no longer Gibson's priority, these new Standard 50's series seems to demonstrate that the old company has understood that it is going straight into the wall if it does not correct its mistakes. I bought mine (brand new) in March 2022 and I’d been able to try 6 of them (all in Tobacco Burst finish), boxes were opened in front of me. Well the 6 were perfectly finished, of high quality and all sounded great! My choice was therefore purely aesthetic to have a body in one piece and a table as less flamed as possible (I find it hideous tables that are too flamed in TB). So I've had this LP for over a year and I still love it so much, it's a real gem!
