My First Electric

When I was 15 I decided I wanted to play guitar so I went out and started looking at Les Pauls. I tried a Studio, a Standard, and this guitar. I picked this one and haven't regretted it. The neck is slim. The '57 classic plus in the bridge and '57 classic in the neck surpasses the burstbuckers found in the Les Paul Standards by a long shot.

Depends what you are going for. The 57 classic is a PAF humbucker made as Seth Lover intended, with perfectly balanced coils. No real PAF met this spec. Beause of the primitive Leesona winding machines Gibson used not having auto-stop, every coil in the 50s and early 60s came out a little different. The Burstbuckers try to simulate this mismatch on the original PAFs much like Duncan's Pearly Gates set. Its 2 different sounds. A 57 classic splits the difference between the properly matched coils of a Patent-sticker T-Top humbucker of the late 60s and 70s and a real PAF or early patent sticker Gibson humbucker. A T-top has short Alnico 5 magnets, whereas most PAFs have long Alnico 2 magnets (some late PAF and early patent number pickups have been found to contain long Alnico IV or V bars. A4 seemed to go in early 60s hollow bodies, especially the gold plated bucker, while 59 and 60 LPs and 61 SGs will sometimes have A5 bars). Duncan's Seth Lover is his equivalent to the 57 classic and he also makes the 59 model that is Lover with a long A5 bar. The Lover, 59, Pearly Gates, 57 classic, burstbucker 1, 2, and 3 are all un-potted like a vintage PAF. In the same camp you have Duncan Alnico II pros, the slash A2 pro signature pickup and Burstbucker pros. These are potted PAF-style pickups inspired by EVH's vintage bridge PAF that he hand dipped in paraffin wax to reducing squealing at his extreme gain levels in the mid 70s. Burstbucker pros also have A5 magnets for more output and treble cut making them like a potted Duncan 59 with mismatched coils. Confused yet?! Every one of these vintage output humbuckers has a viable sound.

I own enough gibsons and other bucker equipped set-necks that I have a real mix of styles throughout my collection. Sometimes I go to great pains to find the right pickups for each guitar, swapping different buckers in and out of each position, adjusting pole pieces and pickup heights and swapping again until each pickup perfectly translates the guitar's acoustic sound through a tube amp. Or at least perfect to my ear.
