Still holds up

It’s a fantastic multiprocessor that still sounds good today. Its weakness is the speaker cabs, so using an IR loader is needed to compete with modern devices. That said, dual signal processing still sounds great

When amp sims really started to take off

This was one of my first pieces of gear I got when I started building my home studio. Granted, now the amp sims seem pretty dated but at the time, having an amp sim with a full suite of effects and direct recording was a game changer for many home studios. Basically this is a souped-up POD XT with all of the expansions, dual tone capabilities, and a much easier to navigate interface. Pretty much a hardware form of the POD Farm Platinum. The high gain amps haven't aged particularly well in terms of sounding like a real amp but I still find myself coming back to it when I'm looking for some harsh industrial tones. The cleans though, actually kind of hold up. All in all, a veritable Swiss army knife for the bedroom guitarist.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

I still use the Twin Reverb and effects all the time. As for the high gain stuff, I tend to disable the cabinet model and then route the POD into my Zoom 9030 or 9050 for a really unique sound that almost doesn't sound like a real guitar.

Reaching the next level of digital amping? Not really...

The X3 is (as most Line6-stuff) beautifully designed and valuable build. Fully packed with effects, amps, cab-emulation and fx-chain-options, so there is quantity and partly good quality. The feature of running 2 chains simultaneously is an interesting option, especially for bass. But the amp emulations were disappointing. I had a hard time to dail in something that delivers cutting mids as the distortion of the X3 delivered muddy and fizzy results in general. For clean sounds and bass the X3 had far more appropriate sounds. So this is a mixed bag as its core element (the digital amping) is also a weak point. 10 years after the inventive original POD has been released the X3 is far from having the same spark of revolution.

Like a kid in a candy store

My old pal, The POD X3. One of the best units out there for the price and you can get a vast amount of tone from it. It is a little tricky to find the right tone and with a lot of tweaking you can find something that sounds pretty close to what you want. Some are pickier than others, but if you want a simple glistening clean tone, you got it. If you want a really heavy distortion tone, you got it. It's a bit overwhelming at first if you are new to using a unit such as this, but after a while of toying with it and searching through the almost endless tone settings, you will get the hang of it.
