Lumpy's Tone Shop Lemondrop review on pedal-of-the-day.com

pedal-of-the-day.com

Lumpy's Tone Shop Lemon Drop Overdrive is a unique pedal that captures the essence of a rare 1960s Vox amp used by iconic bands like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. It delivers a dynamic sound with a gritty, fuzzy note decay, offering great string-to-string definition and an open, articulate tone. While it may not appeal to everyone due to its distinct character, it excels in creating a vintage, dirty overdrive that stands out in a mix. The pedal is well-built, handmade, and customizable, providing excellent value for boutique enthusiasts.

The sound I've been searching for

This pedal nails the 1966–68 Beatles guitar sound. Revolver in a box. Instant Bulldog. Fixing a Hole, indeed.

The tone control is interesting, it seems to be pre-distortion, making it much more useful throughout its range than a typical post-distortion low pass. It goes from thin and penetrating, but still useable, to massive and not at all dull. The bassiest setting also gets a lot more gain in the middle frequencies, making me think this is really a pre mid-boost.

This pedal is just so much fun, immediately earning its position on my board. I've been searching for this sound forever, finally I have it.

Edit: Like many vintage fuzzes, it sometimes receives AM radio. This should have been filtered out on a modern pedal. One star less for this.

My favorite drive pedal, I use this in conjunction with the muff for a smooth lead boost that cut's really well with the AC30

is that the one that's based loosely on the vox UL amps? I thought he called it an LZII, but I could be way off.... I can never keep track of all these boutique guys and their products. Someone needs to make a hone app to help us identify pedals.

its a great pedal, this is the newest version, its a slight variation of the pedal you're thinking of

"Jay Gonzalez is his own man. He played his 1968 Gibson SG Special outfitted with a Baxendale Vibrola mod that basically applies the Paul Bigsby design of a rocking bridge to a Gibson ABR-1 Tune-o-matic. It makes the Gibson Vibrola usable and requires no modification to the body. Jay’s signal ran through a Lumpy’s Tone Shop 7 Series Lemon Drop Overdrive into a Strymon El Capistan dTape Echo pedal, then out to an ancient National Valco 1212 Chicago 51 tube combo amp. His guitars also sport D’Addario EXL115 strings, and, like Patton, he uses a Dunlop 1.14 mm Tortex standard pick."
