    Source
  • Newer MXR Script Phase 90 units with LED utilize a black PCB, contrasting older models with a green EVH PCB, affecting sound and bypass style.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • For achieving Gilmour's phaser tone, the handwired 1974 Phase 90 or the Whirlwind Orange Box are preferred due to their accurate reproduction of the original sound.

CSP101SL Script Phase 90 w LED Review: This pedal can honestly be used in just about any genre... | MXR | Guitar Effects | Reviews @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com

ultimate-guitar.com

The MXR CSP101SL Script Phase 90 with LED is a classic phaser pedal that excels in delivering lush, warm tones reminiscent of Van Halen. It integrates smoothly with both clean and overdriven sounds without overshadowing your guitar's character. While it lacks additional controls like a depth knob, the single Speed knob makes it incredibly easy to use. Built like a tank, it promises durability and reliability typical of MXR products. Although it might not satisfy those seeking more versatile phasing options, its rich and sweet sonic profile makes it a staple for many players.

A warmer and smoother alternative to the block phase 90.

I would grab this pedal over the 74 reissue any day of the week except as a collectible. This is a better alternative to the block phase 90 if you want a more refined, subtle and warm phaser (preferably set before your dirt).

That being said, i’d recommend grabbing a phase 95 over this or the EVH phase 90 which doesn’t do anything more than the phase 95 already does except having a fancy paint job. Plus the 95 will save you some pedalboard real estate.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Rate anywhere below 12 o’clock. Set before distorion/od.

emuemulator2

70's psychedelic sounds.

I bought one for my bass guitar after hearing "Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent as the original recording of the bass had this pedal on it. Sounds just like that original recording with a PJ bass with roundwounds and low action. Outside of that, think Thin Lizzy, early Pink Floyd, or the Police.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

10 O'clock for stranglehold sound.

As good as a Phase 90 gets

I cannot understand how the regular Phase 90 sells so much as it sounds very harsh compared to this one.

MXR Phase 95

similar sound

The Phase 95 is smaller, has the same sound in addition to the block Phase 90 and the Phase 45 script/block while still retaining the simplicity of having one knob.

MXR Phase 90 (R28 Mod)

similar sound cheaper alternative mod

Are you considering buying an MXR CSP101SL Script Phase 90 with LED because your MXR M101 Phase 90 adds volume and slight distortion and it doesn't suit you? The easiest and cheapest way is to keep your MXR M101 Phase 90 and make the R28 mod. It's very simple, just disassemble the pedal and desolder the R28 resistor or simply cut one of the two "legs" (it works for PCB revision E and F). To understand the principle of this modification, here is a tutorial : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBYUNdlJUZQ
