Description

Introducing the PRS Silver Sky Electric Guitar, a perfect blend of vintage inspiration and modern innovation. This remarkable instrument is the brainchild of Grammy Award-winning artist John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith, a collaboration over two and a half years in the making. The Silver Sky is a nod to the iconic guitars of 1963 and 1964, yet it carries the distinct essence of PRS.

The model features a unique headstock shape, based on PRS's trademark design but inverted to better suit Mayer's playing style and enhance tune maintenance. The PRS's locking tuners are vintage-style and closed-back, ensuring an ideal blend of traditional aesthetics and modern functionality. The guitar also boasts a neck shape modeled after vintage instruments of the early '60s, coupled with a 7.25" radius fretboard for a truly comfortable grip.

The Silver Sky's bridge is flush with the body, designed to only drop in pitch, enhancing the acoustic loudness of the guitar. This feature improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the 635JM single-coil pickups, delivering a well-rounded and full sound, with a musical high end that never comes across as brash or harsh.

Key Features:

  • Unique inverted headstock design for enhanced tune maintenance
  • Vintage-style, closed-back, locking tuners for aesthetic appeal and functionality
  • Neck shape modeled after vintage '63/'64 guitars for comfortable grip
  • Flush bridge design for improved acoustic loudness
  • 635JM single-coil pickups for a full, musical sound
  • Molded metal jack plate for hassle-free plugging and unplugging
  • Double action truss rod for easy adjustment

Critic Reviews

PRS Silver Sky Review

guitar.com

The PRS Silver Sky stands out as a well-executed blend of classic Stratocaster aesthetics with modern PRS innovations, earning high praise for its expressive tonal qualities and meticulous design. While some purists might balk at the distinct PRS headstock and vintage-inspired 7.25-inch radius fretboard, the guitar’s build quality and sound have been lauded, with particular emphasis on its clear, dynamic tone and impressive tuning stability. Notably, the Silver Sky offers a remarkable balance across its pickups, delivering a sound reminiscent of pre-CBS Strats while incorporating Mayer's personal refinements for a more "musical" high end. Its success lies in retaining the spirit of iconic guitars while infusing them with PRS's manufacturing prowess, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a high-quality, vintage-inspired electric guitar.

PRS Silver Sky USA Demo/Review — Fairfarren

fairfarrenmusic.com

The PRS Silver Sky impresses with its exceptional build quality and playability, offering a fresh take on vintage tones. Its unique design features, like the reversed headstock and vintage-style pickups, deliver clarity and a pleasing attack. While not ideal for high-gain settings, its versatility shines in various genres. Some may find the gig bag instead of a hardshell case a minor downside, but the guitar's overall quality makes it a standout choice for both Strat enthusiasts and John Mayer fans. A surprisingly inspiring instrument that challenges traditional preferences.

positive

PRS Silver Sky — A Touring Musician’s Review | by Josh Sahunta | Medium

medium.com

Josh Sahunta’s review of the PRS Silver Sky reflects a transformation from skepticism to admiration. Initially put off by the Strat-like design and neck shape, Sahunta found the guitar's transparency beneficial for consistent live performances. Praised for its impeccable fit and finish, the Silver Sky excels in versatility, with tone knobs providing a wide range of sounds. Despite its hefty price tag, the guitar only includes a gig bag, which is a minor downside. Ultimately, the Silver Sky emerges as a standout choice for those seeking a blend of classic Strat features with modern aesthetics and performance.

positive

PRS Silver Sky John Mayer Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The PRS Silver Sky Electric Guitar, co-designed by John Mayer, is a modern homage to vintage Stratocasters. With its vintage-inspired tones and top-notch craftsmanship, it successfully captures the essence of early '60s models while introducing thoughtful updates like improved hardware and a more ergonomic design. The guitar's pickups deliver a complex, airy high end, making it a joy to play with both clean and overdriven tones. However, its hybrid aesthetics, blending PRS and Stratocaster elements, may not please purists. Despite this, the Silver Sky stands out as a superbly built instrument that offers both classic sounds and modern playability.

when old and new collide.

This guitar is simply one that has to be felt to be understood. There was great controversy over it due to the odvious reasons. But that aside this guitar is well worth it. Out the box it has the feel of a vintage Strat, the neck is different and more meaty than more modern styles. But this lends its self to really being able to feel and control notes in an unparalleled way. The pick ups are equally in the vein of vintage fenders but with a certain character all there own. Every thing about this guitar screams premium and the last strat you will ever need. This guitar sits comfortably in any setting. From funk and disco to rock, blues and everything else you can think of. Every tone is usable, everything is just right. If you can try one. Do! The only drawback is it comes In a gig bag that really is not befitting of the price tag. 9 months on, i now want to add I am highly unimpressed with the plastics. Through no real violent use the selector switch has split in two and the paint has worn off the volume knob, it seems these are widely recorded issueS. For a guitar of this price point this is not acceptable.

Perfection

Literally everything you can hope for in a vintage S type guitar. It feels great, it stays in tune, bends are a breeze, and the pickups are so clear but can get gritty anytime you need them to. The best guitar I have ever owned and one of the best I have ever played.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Position 5 (neck pickup) with tone at 10. Clean amp with low overdrive pedal like the Wampler Tumnus. Position 4 (neck and middle) with tone at 7. Clean amp with more grit (pair the Tumnus with a Tube Screamer and Chorus).
