Critic Reviews

Review: J. Rockett Animal

dumeril7.com

The J. Rockett Animal Overdrive impresses as a top-tier medium-gain distortion pedal, praised for its Marshall-esque tone and balanced sound profile. Its touch sensitivity and clarity at various gain levels make it versatile, while the Snarl switch adds a vintage Marshall boost for a more aggressive edge. Though it may show fingerprints and scratches due to its black finish, and the side jacks may not suit all pedalboards, these are minor quibbles for an otherwise stellar pedal. The review is overwhelmingly positive, with only minor aesthetic criticisms.

I imagine this is what it's like to play a Plexi

This is considered an amp-in-a-box. It is dynamic to your playing the way an amp would compress to your playing. Without the Snarl switch I'd be fine with the low gain sound but it really cranks! Make sure to have Volume as high as you can go and adjust Gain to get the right volume. I believe it adds more of the color of the pedal and the chunky notes sound fuller. I traded a $300-400 Tiny Terror for this and never really regretted it because it's a good pedal. As of now you can find it for a hundred bucks, buy it!

Versatile Overdrive

A very musical overdrive. In low gain, it has a John Mayer kinda texture. When the snarl toggle is switched on, it gives a nice Marshall plexi voice. Build like a tank. I've opened the chassis to examine its content. No Gimmicks, you get quality components and excellent workmanship. I like how the builders even incorporated sponge to hold your 9V batter in place. Unfortunately I was unable to access and view the tone pots as there are 3 screw on the front panel that requires an odd sized screw. A highly recommended pedal for your rig.
