Stone Deaf PDF-2 & EP-1 Expression Pedal Review

guitar.com

For those seeking tonal versatility, the Stone Deaf PDF-2 Parametric Distortion Filter offers an impressive blend of EQ, boost, and overdrive capabilities. Its metal-clad build, reminiscent of classic British engineering, ensures durability, while the integration with the EP-1 Expression Pedal adds a dynamic range of wah and phaser effects. The PDF-2 excels in delivering everything from warm crunch to chaotic fuzz, making it a favorite for those who enjoy sculpting unique soundscapes. However, the EP-1's true potential shines through subtle manipulation rather than excessive use. Overall, this pedal and its companion expression unit provide an expansive and creative platform for musicians, though it may demand a learning curve to master its full potential.

Awesome EQ and unique grit in one

I initially bought a Stone Deaf Trashy Blonde a few years ago. While I loved the EQ section of it wherever I could use it, I wasn't a fan of the dirty side. It was too much of a standard OD sound for me, and that pedal is very large so I never wanted to put it on my board even though I thought the EQ was worth the price of admission. When SD released the PDF-2 it added a gain control I wanted on the 1, and the box is smaller. After finally getting it in very pleased. The distortion is definitely an expansion of what the original was capable of, and it gets to the fuzzy distortion area that a lot of classic pedals do very well with that amazing EQ. The volume level is fixed, and it's a boost, even for my guitars with actives. I haven't read the manual or asked the company of there is a mini trimmer inside to adjust that, but I don't mind. I generally want a bit of an increase in volume when turning it on. On top of that, it seems to somehow compensate for perceived volume loss/boost with even extreme EQ cuts/boosts. Overall, I'm very happy and expect it to become a staple as a dirt box on its own, or kicking the front end of a dirty amp. I forgot to mention the hairy distortion blended with amp dirt sounds awesome. So far I've tried it with a Mesa Trem-O-Verb, JCM800, a mini Bassman with a master volume based thing and Supro based amp

Complicated but worth it

You need a PhD and an oscilloscope to figure out how to operate this thing, but once you do, you'll be rewarded with a few great sounds. Instant desert rock in a box. Too dark for anything else.
