Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Universal Audio Avalon 737sp Channel Strip.

Setup and maintenance

  • The Avalon 737sp's compressor is noted for being slow; a low ratio (1.5-2:1) with fast attack and release is recommended for better performance.

    Source
  • Recording in a closet with clothes can be problematic; using heavy blankets and stands to create a makeshift booth is recommended for better sound capture.

    Source
  • Users suggest trying distortion modes on the Distressor in HP mode to add life to a vocal chain involving the Avalon 737sp.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Users found the EQ on the Avalon 737sp flexible, though described as "fiddly," and suggested using the air band for RnB vocals.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Avalon 737sp, when paired with a Neumann U87, was a preferred chain for hip-hop/R&B vocals in early 2000s Atlanta, providing a professional standard sound.

    Source
  • The Avalon 737sp is preferred for tracking vocals, offering a more complete sound directly into the DAW, reducing reliance on additional plugins.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Avalon 737sp's compressor might not handle significant gain reductions seamlessly, unlike other vocal compressors, but remains usable for certain applications like bass guitar.

    Source
  • Users report the Avalon 737sp hardware provides a more authentic tube sound with smoother high end and better low-end integration compared to the UAD plugin.

    Source
  • Avalon 737sp can make vocals sound thin and plasticy, contrasting with Neve-style pres which offer more apparent low and low-mid harmonic content.

    Source
  • Neve-style pres may pair better with brighter vocal mics like the Sony C800G or Manley Ref C, unlike the Avalon 737sp, which may flatten high frequencies.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Adding a standalone outboard stereo compressor, such as an SSL G Buss Comp or SSL Fusion, is suggested for enhancing the stereo/mix buss beyond the Avalon's built-in features.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The UAD plugin offers practicality and portability, beneficial for quick setups or mobile recording situations where hardware isn't feasible.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners of both the hardware and UAD plugin note that the perceptible differences are minimal in mixes, with the hardware offering a slightly elevated top end.

    Source
  • Users find that Avalon 737sp adds an unwanted air layer over vocals, even without boosting high end, making it challenging to achieve a fat-sounding low end.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Some users argue that if the hardware and plugin were identical in performance, the pricing would reflect this and hardware would be obsolete.

    Source
  • Considerations for trading Avalon 737sp for BAE 1073mp involve potential value loss, as the BAE is valued lower, around $1500 Canadian new.

Excellent

Of course it's not the same matter of its original hardware counterpart but this plugin version is really excellent and it make a great job in all type of sounds (drums, bass, vocals, pads, etc.). Personally I like it so much and it's active in every track I do. (sorry for my bad english)
