Critic Reviews

Yamaha Motif XF7

soundonsound.com

The Yamaha MOTIF XF7 impresses with substantial upgrades, boasting non-volatile Flash memory for customizable sample retention, doubling its internal ROM, and enhancing user Voice and Performance Banks. The expanded arpeggio selection and vibrant new samples, like the S6 piano and Yamaha drum kits, further elevate its sonic palette. Despite its lightweight FSX keyboard feeling somewhat lackluster for a professional instrument, the XF7's capacity for permanent sample storage and integration potential makes it a compelling choice for both new users and existing Motif owners considering an upgrade.

Complex menus. Great sound flexibility

Broad sound palette, with good solo strings and swirling pads. Lots of editing capability but too much diving into menus. Ok in live use but I get best usage as a midi slave with patches preassigned and linked to Nord Stage 2 patches. Eg. EP on Nord with solo violin on Motif.

I can never get behind these all digital preset beasts with built in sequencers. No fun to program and I don't need all the features, plus the powerful features are not easily accessible on the fly. Even the Kurzweil K2000, my favorite in this genre, is a bear to deal with. Basically a sound design tool that kills creativity by taking too long to navigate.

Right on!!

Motif , Motivates you to play

Looks great, Feels Great. I had the XF6 then upgraded to the XF7 within a month of purchase. Thought i really need the extra keys for good lower bass response. Really Strong and Powerful synthesizer, just too many things to play around with and there's something new you can do each day with it.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT MUSICAL SET-UP? It changes depending on the context. For live shows I use 4 synths – the Roland JP8000, the Korg MS 2000, the Yamaha Motif and the Roland V Synth GT. In the studio, the list is endless!
